THE LION, THE WOLF, AND THE FOX
사자, 늑대, 그리고 여우
A Lion, infirm with age, lay sick in his den, and all the beasts of the forest came to inquire after his health with the exception of the Fox.
나이가 들어 쇠약해진 사자가 자신의 굴에 병들어 누워 있었는데, 여우를 제외한 숲속의 모든 짐승들이 그의 안부를 묻기 위해 찾아왔다.
The Wolf thought this was a good opportunity for paying off old scores against the Fox, so he called the attention of the Lion to his absence, and said, "You see, sire, that we have all come to see how you are except the Fox, who hasn't come near you, and doesn't care whether you are well or ill."
늑대는 이것이 여우에게 묵은 앙갚음을 할 좋은 기회라고 생각하여, 사자의 주의를 여우의 부재로 돌리며 말했다. "보시다시피, 전하, 저희는 모두 전하의 안부를 묻기 위해 왔지만, 여우는 전하 곁에 오지도 않았고 전하가 건강한지 아픈지도 신경 쓰지 않습니다."
Just then the Fox came in and heard the last words of the Wolf.
바로 그때 여우가 들어와 늑대의 마지막 말을 들었다.
The Lion roared at him in deep displeasure, but he begged to be allowed to explain his absence, and said, "Not one of them cares for you so much as I, sire, for all the time I have been going round to the doctors and trying to find a cure for your illness."
사자는 깊은 불쾌감으로 그에게 으르렁댔지만, 여우는 자신의 부재를 설명할 기회를 달라고 간청하며 말했다. "저들 중 어느 누구도 저만큼 전하를 걱정하지 않습니다, 전하, 저는 그동안 의사들을 찾아다니며 전하의 병을 고칠 치료법을 찾으려 애써왔습니다."
"And may I ask if you have found one?" said the Lion.

"I have, sire," said the Fox, "and it is this: you must flay a Wolf and wrap yourself in his skin while it is still warm."
"찾았습니다, 전하," 여우가 말했다. "그것은 바로 이것입니다: 늑대의 가죽을 벗겨 아직 따뜻할 때 그 가죽으로 몸을 감싸셔야 합니다."
The Lion accordingly turned to the Wolf and struck him dead with one blow of his paw, in order to try the Fox's prescription; but the Fox laughed and said to himself, "That's what comes of stirring up ill-will."
