" (when she thought it over afterwards, it occurred to her that she ought to have wondered at this, but at the time it all seemed quite natural); but when the Rabbit actually _took a watch out of its waistcoat-pocket_, and looked at it, and then hurried on, Alice started to her feet, for it flashed across her mind that she had never before seen a rabbit with either a waistcoat-pocket, or a watch to take out of it, and burning with curiosity, she ran across the field after it, and fortunately was just in time to see it pop down a large rabbit-hole under the hedge.

（後でそのことをじっくり考えてみると、これを不思議に思うべきだったと気がついたのですが、そのときはすべてごく自然なことのように思えたのです）。しかし、ウサギが実際にチョッキのポケットから時計を取り出し、それを見てから急いで走り去ったとき、アリスははっと立ち上がりました。チョッキのポケットも、そこから取り出す時計も持っているウサギなど、今まで一度も見たことがなかったと、ふと心をよぎったからです。好奇心に胸を焦がしながら、アリスは野原をウサギの後を追って走り、運よくちょうど間に合って、ウサギが生け垣の下の大きなウサギの穴へと飛び込むのを見ることができました。

In another moment down went Alice after it, never once considering how in the world she was to get out again.

次の瞬間、アリスもウサギの後を追って穴の中へと降りていきました。どうやって外へ出るかなど、まったく考えもせずに。

The rabbit-hole went straight on like a tunnel for some way, and then dipped suddenly down, so suddenly that Alice had not a moment to think about stopping herself before she found herself falling down a very deep well.

ウサギの穴はしばらくトンネルのようにまっすぐ続いていましたが、その後突然急に下へと落ち込んでいました。あまりにも突然だったので、アリスは体を止めることを考える間もなく、気がつくととても深い井戸の中を落ちていたのです。

Either the well was very deep, or she fell very slowly, for she had plenty of time as she went down to look about her and to wonder what was going to happen next.

井戸がとても深いのか、それともアリスがとてもゆっくり落ちているのか、落ちながら周りを見回したり、この先いったい何が起こるのだろうと考えたりする時間が十分にありました。
