Alice's Adventures in Wonderland — Page 7

English → Korean Preface Level 5/10

Everything is so out-of-the-way down here, that I should think very likely it can talk: at any rate, there's no harm in trying."

여기 아래는 모든 것이 너무나 별나니까, 저것도 말을 할 수 있을 것 같아. 어쨌든 한번 해봐서 나쁠 건 없지."

So she began: "O Mouse, do you know the way out of this pool?

그래서 그녀는 시작했다. "오 생쥐야, 이 연못에서 나가는 길을 알고 있니?

I am very tired of swimming about here, O Mouse!"

나는 여기서 헤엄치는 것이 너무 지쳐, 오 생쥐야!"

(Alice thought this must be the right way of speaking to a mouse: she had never done such a thing before, but she remembered having seen in her brother's Latin Grammar, "A mouse—of a mouse—to a mouse—a mouse—O mouse!")

(앨리스는 이것이 생쥐에게 말을 거는 올바른 방법임에 틀림없다고 생각했다. 그녀는 전에 그런 일을 해본 적이 없었지만, 오빠의 라틴어 문법책에서 본 것이 기억났다. "생쥐가—생쥐의—생쥐에게—생쥐를—오 생쥐여!")

The Mouse looked at her rather inquisitively, and seemed to her to wink with one of its little eyes, but it said nothing.

생쥐는 꽤 호기심 어린 눈으로 그녀를 바라보더니, 작은 눈 하나로 윙크하는 것처럼 보였지만, 아무 말도 하지 않았다.

"Perhaps it doesn't understand English," thought Alice; "I daresay it's a French mouse, come over with William the Conqueror."

"어쩌면 영어를 이해하지 못하는 걸 수도 있어," 앨리스는 생각했다. "아마도 정복왕 윌리엄과 함께 건너온 프랑스 생쥐일 거야."

(For, with all her knowledge of history, Alice had no very clear notion how long ago anything had happened.)

(왜냐하면, 역사에 대한 지식이 있음에도 불구하고, 앨리스는 어떤 일이 얼마나 오래전에 일어났는지 그다지 명확하게 알지 못했기 때문이다.)

So she began again: "Où est ma chatte?" which was the first sentence in her French lesson-book.

그래서 그녀는 다시 시작했다. "Où est ma chatte?" 그것은 그녀의 프랑스어 교과서의 첫 번째 문장이었다.

The Mouse gave a sudden leap out of the water, and seemed to quiver all over with fright.

생쥐는 갑자기 물 밖으로 펄쩍 뛰어오르더니, 온몸을 공포로 떨고 있는 것처럼 보였다.

"Oh, I beg your pardon!" cried Alice hastily, afraid that she had hurt the poor animal's feelings.

"오, 미안해요!" 앨리스는 불쌍한 동물의 감정을 상하게 했을까봐 두려워하며 서둘러 외쳤다.

"I quite forgot you didn't like cats."

"당신이 고양이를 좋아하지 않는다는 것을 깜빡했어요."

"Not like cats!" cried the Mouse, in a shrill, passionate voice.

"고양이를 좋아하지 않는다고!" 생쥐가 날카롭고 격정적인 목소리로 외쳤다.

"Would _you_ like cats if you were me?"

"네가 나라면 고양이를 좋아하겠어?"

"Well, perhaps not," said Alice in a soothing tone: "don't be angry about it.

"글쎄, 아마 아닐 수도 있겠지," 앨리스가 달래는 어조로 말했다. "그것 때문에 화내지 마.
