一刻の猶予もありませんでした。アリスは風のように走り去り、ちょうど間に合って、ウサギが角を曲がりながら「ああ、耳もヒゲも、なんて遅くなってしまったんだ!」と言うのが聞こえました。

There was not a moment to be lost: away went Alice like the wind, and was just in time to hear it say, as it turned a corner, "Oh my ears and whiskers, how late it's getting!"

彼女が角を曲がったとき、ウサギのすぐ後ろにいましたが、ウサギはもう見えませんでした。彼女は長くて天井の低い広間にいることに気づきました。天井から下がった一列のランプで照らされていました。

She was close behind it when she turned the corner, but the Rabbit was no longer to be seen: she found herself in a long, low hall, which was lit up by a row of lamps hanging from the roof.

広間の周りには扉がたくさんありましたが、どれも鍵がかかっていました。アリスは片側を端まで行き、反対側を戻りながら、すべての扉を試してみましたが、どの扉も開かず、悲しそうに真ん中を歩きながら、どうやってまた外に出られるのだろうかと考えていました。

There were doors all round the hall, but they were all locked; and when Alice had been all the way down one side and up the other, trying every door, she walked sadly down the middle, wondering how she was ever to get out again.

突然、彼女は小さな三本脚のテーブルに出くわしました。全体が透明なガラスでできていて、その上には小さな金色の鍵以外何もありませんでした。

Suddenly she came upon a little three-legged table, all made of solid glass; there was nothing on it except a tiny golden key, and Alice's first thought was that it might belong to one of the doors of the hall;

アリスの最初の考えは、それが広間の扉のどれかの鍵かもしれないということでした。しかし、ああ!錠が大きすぎるか、鍵が小さすぎるかで、とにかくどの扉も開きませんでした。

but, alas! either the locks were too large, or the key was too small, but at any rate it would not open any of them.

しかし、二回目に回ったとき、彼女は以前に気づかなかった低いカーテンに出くわし、その後ろには高さ約15インチの小さな扉がありました。彼女は錠に小さな金色の鍵を試してみると、なんと喜ばしいことに、ぴったり合ったのです!

However, on the second time round, she came upon a low curtain she had not noticed before, and behind it was a little door about fifteen inches high: she tried the little golden key in the lock, and to her great delight it fitted!
