여왕의 크로케 경기장

The Queen's Croquet-Ground

정원 입구 근처에 큰 장미나무 한 그루가 서 있었다. 그 나무에 핀 장미들은 흰색이었는데, 세 명의 정원사가 그곳에서 바쁘게 장미들을 빨간색으로 칠하고 있었다.

A large rose-tree stood near the entrance of the garden: the roses growing on it were white, but there were three gardeners at it, busily painting them red.

앨리스는 이것이 매우 이상한 일이라고 생각했고, 그들을 지켜보려고 더 가까이 갔다. 그리고 막 그들에게 다가갔을 때 그들 중 한 명이 말하는 것을 들었다.

Alice thought this a very curious thing, and she went nearer to watch them, and just as she came up to them she heard one of them say,

"조심해, 파이브! 그렇게 페인트를 내 위에 튀기지 마!"

"Look out now, Five! Don't go splashing paint over me like that!"

"어쩔 수 없었어." 파이브가 뾰루퉁한 말투로 말했다. "세븐이 내 팔꿈치를 건드렸거든."

"I couldn't help it," said Five, in a sulky tone; "Seven jogged my elbow."

그러자 세븐이 올려다보며 말했다. "그렇지, 파이브! 항상 남의 탓으로 돌리지!"

On which Seven looked up and said, "That's right, Five! Always lay the blame on others!"

"네가 말 안 하는 게 좋을 거야!" 파이브가 말했다. "어제 여왕님이 네가 참수당할 만하다고 말씀하시는 걸 내가 들었어!"

"You'd better not talk!" said Five. "I heard the Queen say only yesterday you deserved to be beheaded!"

"무슨 이유로?" 처음 말했던 사람이 물었다.

"What for?" said the one who had spoken first.

"그건 네가 상관할 일이 아니야, 투!" 세븐이 말했다.

"That's none of your business, Two!" said Seven.

"아니, 그건 그의 일이 맞아!" 파이브가 말했다. "그리고 내가 말해주지—양파 대신 요리사에게 튤립 뿌리를 가져다준 것 때문이었어."

"Yes, it is his business!" said Five, "and I'll tell him—it was for bringing the cook tulip-roots instead of onions."

세븐은 붓을 내던지고 막 "글쎄, 모든 불공평한 일들 중에서—"라고 말하기 시작했는데, 우연히 그들을 지켜보며 서 있던 앨리스에게 시선이 닿았고, 갑자기 말을 멈췄다.

Seven flung down his brush, and had just begun "Well, of all the unjust things—" when his eye chanced to fall upon Alice, as she stood watching them, and he checked himself suddenly:

나머지들도 돌아보았고, 그들 모두 깊이 절을 했다.

the others looked round also, and all of them bowed low.

"말씀해 주시겠어요?" 앨리스가 약간 소심하게 물었다. "왜 저 장미들을 칠하고 계시는 거예요?"

"Would you tell me," said Alice, a little timidly, "why you are painting those roses?"

파이브와 세븐은 아무 말도 하지 않고 투를 바라보았다.

Five and Seven said nothing, but looked at Two.
