Beowulf: An Anglo-Saxon Epic Poem — Page 4

English → Korean Full Text Level 9/10

Of those translators who have used verse, several have written from what would seem a mistaken point of view.

운문을 사용한 번역자들 중에서, 몇몇은 잘못된 관점에서 글을 쓴 것으로 보인다.

Is it proper, for instance, that the grave and solemn speeches of Beowulf and Hrothgar be put in ballad measures, tripping lightly and airily along?

예를 들어, 베오울프와 흐로스가르의 엄숙하고 장중한 연설을 발랄하고 경쾌하게 흘러가는 발라드 운율로 옮기는 것이 과연 적절한가?

Or, again, is it fitting that the rough martial music of Anglo-Saxon verse be interpreted to us in the smooth measures of modern blank verse?

또한, 앵글로색슨 시의 거칠고 전투적인 음악성을 현대 무운시의 매끄러운 운율로 우리에게 전달하는 것이 과연 적합한가?

Do we hear what has been beautifully called "the clanging tread of a warrior in mail"?

우리는 아름답게 표현된 "갑옷을 입은 전사의 쩌렁쩌렁한 발걸음 소리"를 듣고 있는가?

Of all English translations of Beowulf, that of Professor Garnett alone gives any adequate idea of the chief characteristics of this great Teutonic epic.

베오울프의 모든 영어 번역본 중에서, 가넷 교수의 번역본만이 이 위대한 튜턴 서사시의 주요 특성에 대해 충분한 개념을 제공한다.

The measure used in the present translation is believed to be as near a reproduction of the original as modern English affords.

이번 번역에 사용된 운율은 현대 영어가 허용하는 한 원문에 최대한 가깝게 재현된 것으로 여겨진다.

The cadences closely resemble those used by Browning in some of his most striking poems.

그 율격은 브라우닝이 그의 가장 인상적인 시들 중 일부에서 사용한 것과 매우 유사하다.

The four stresses of the Anglo-Saxon verse are retained, and as much thesis and anacrusis is allowed as is consistent with a regular cadence.

앵글로색슨 시의 네 가지 강세는 유지되었으며, 규칙적인 율격과 일치하는 범위 내에서 강음절과 약음절이 최대한 허용되었다.

Alliteration has been used to a large extent; but it was thought that modern ears would hardly tolerate it on every line.

두운법은 상당한 정도로 사용되었지만, 현대 독자들의 귀가 매 행마다 그것을 감내하기는 어려울 것이라 판단되었다.

End-rhyme has been used occasionally; internal rhyme, sporadically.

행말 운은 가끔 사용되었고, 내부 운은 산발적으로 사용되었다.

Both have some warrant in Anglo-Saxon poetry.

두 가지 모두 앵글로색슨 시에서 어느 정도 근거를 가지고 있다.

(For end-rhyme, see 1_53, 1_54; for internal rhyme, 2_21, 6_40.)

(행말 운에 대해서는 1_53, 1_54를 참조하고, 내부 운에 대해서는 2_21, 6_40을 참조하라.)

What Gummere calls the "rime-giver" has been studiously kept; viz., the first accented syllable in the second half-verse always carries the alliteration; and the last accented syllable alliterates only sporadically.

구메레가 "운율 제공자"라고 부르는 것은 세심하게 유지되었다. 즉, 후반부 시행의 첫 번째 강세 음절은 항상 두운을 담당하며, 마지막 강세 음절은 산발적으로만 두운을 형성한다.
