A fierce and desperate hand-to-hand struggle ensues.

No arms are used, both combatants trusting to strength and hand-grip.

Beowulf tears Grendel's shoulder from its socket, and the monster retreats to his den, howling and yelling with agony and fury.

Рана оказывается смертельной.

The wound is fatal.

На следующее утро, на рассвете, множество воинов стекается в чертог Хеорот, чтобы услышать новости.

The next morning, at early dawn, warriors in numbers flock to the hall Heorot, to hear the news.

Радость не знает границ.

Joy is boundless.

Glee runs high.

Хротгар и его приближённые щедры на благодарность и дары.

Hrothgar and his retainers are lavish of gratitude and of gifts.

Однако мать Гренделя приходит следующей ночью, чтобы отомстить за его гибель.

Grendel's mother, however, comes the next night to avenge his death.

She is furious and raging.

Пока Беовульф спит в покоях, несколько удалённых от остальных воинов, она похищает одного из любимых советников Хротгара, уносит его с собой и пожирает.

While Beowulf is sleeping in a room somewhat apart from the quarters of the other warriors, she seizes one of Hrothgar's favorite counsellors, and carries him off and devours him.

Зовут Беовульфа.

Beowulf is called.

Решив полностью очистить Хеорот, он вооружается и спускается на поиски чудовища-женщины.

Determined to leave Heorot entirely purified, he arms himself, and goes down to look for the female monster.

Проплыв сквозь воды долгие часы, он встречает её вблизи морского дна.

After traveling through the waters many hours, he meets her near the sea-bottom.

Она тащит его в своё логово.

She drags him to her den.

Там он видит мёртвого Гренделя.

There he sees Grendel lying dead.

После отчаянной и едва не ставшей смертельной схватки с этой женщиной он убивает её и триумфально всплывает наверх, унося с собой голову Гренделя.

After a desperate and almost fatal struggle with the woman, he slays her, and swims upward in triumph, taking with him Grendel's head.

В Хеороте вновь царит радость.

Joy is renewed at Heorot.

Поздравления осыпают победителя со всех сторон.

Congratulations crowd upon the victor.

Хротгар буквально осыпает Беовульфа сокровищами, и вассалы короля сходятся во мнении, что Беовульф станет их следующим повелителем.

Hrothgar literally pours treasures into the lap of Beowulf; and it is agreed among the vassals of the king that Beowulf will be their next liegelord.

Беовульф покидает землю данов.

Beowulf leaves Dane-land.

Хротгар плачет и скорбит при его отъезде.

Hrothgar weeps and laments at his departure.
