La Volontà di Verità, che dovrebbe tentarci verso molte imprese rischiose, la famosa Veracità di cui tutti i filosofi hanno finora parlato con rispetto, quante domande non ha posto davanti a noi questa Volontà di Verità!

The Will to Truth, which is to tempt us to many a hazardous enterprise, the famous Truthfulness of which all philosophers have hitherto spoken with respect, what questions has this Will to Truth not laid before us!

Che domande strane, sconcertanti, discutibili!

What strange, perplexing, questionable questions!

È già una lunga storia; eppure sembra come se fosse appena cominciata.

It is already a long story; yet it seems as if it were hardly commenced.

C'è forse da meravigliarsi se alla fine diventiamo diffidenti, perdiamo la pazienza e ci allontaniamo con impazienza?

Is it any wonder if we at last grow distrustful, lose patience, and turn impatiently away?

Che questa Sfinge ci insegni alla fine a fare domande noi stessi?

That this Sphinx teaches us at last to ask questions ourselves?

CHI è davvero colui che ci pone qui delle domande?

WHO is it really that puts questions to us here?

COSA è davvero questa «Volontà di Verità» in noi?

WHAT really is this "Will to Truth" in us?

In effetti ci siamo fermati a lungo sulla questione dell'origine di questa Volontà — finché alla fine non siamo giunti a un arresto assoluto davanti a una questione ancora più fondamentale.

In fact we made a long halt at the question as to the origin of this Will--until at last we came to an absolute standstill before a yet more fundamental question.

Abbiamo indagato sul VALORE di questa Volontà.

We inquired about the VALUE of this Will.

Ammesso che vogliamo la verità: PERCHÉ NON PIUTTOSTO la menzogna? E l'incertezza? Persino l'ignoranza?

Granted that we want the truth: WHY NOT RATHER untruth? And uncertainty? Even ignorance?

Il problema del valore della verità si è presentato davanti a noi — o siamo stati noi a presentarci davanti al problema?

The problem of the value of truth presented itself before us--or was it we who presented ourselves before the problem?

Chi di noi è qui l'Edipo? Chi la Sfinge?

Which of us is the Oedipus here? Which the Sphinx?

Sembrerebbe un appuntamento di domande e punti interrogativi.

It would seem to be a rendezvous of questions and notes of interrogation.

E si potrebbe credere che alla fine ci sembra come se il problema non fosse mai stato posto prima, come se fossimo i primi a scorgerlo, a intravederlo, e a OSARE SOLLEVARLO?

And could it be believed that it at last seems to us as if the problem had never been propounded before, as if we were the first to discern it, get a sight of it, and RISK RAISING it?
