彼は私の脚と胸をさすってくれたが、温かい布を掛けてはくれなかった。私がとても熱いので、布は要らないだろうと思ったのだ。

He rubbed my legs and my chest, but he did not put my warm cloth on me; he thought I was so hot I should not like it.

それから彼はバケツ一杯の水を飲ませてくれた。冷たくてとても美味しかったので、私は全部飲み干した。

Then he gave me a pailful of water to drink; it was cold and very good, and I drank it all;

そして干し草とトウモロコシを与えて、十分にやり終えたと思い、立ち去ってしまった。

then he gave me some hay and some corn, and thinking he had done right, he went away.

やがて私は震えが来て、体が凍えるように冷たくなった。脚が痛み、腰が痛み、胸が痛み、全身が痛かった。

Soon I began to shake and tremble, and turned deadly cold; my legs ached, my loins ached, and my chest ached, and I felt sore all over.

ああ！立ち尽くして震えながら、あの温かくて厚い布が恋しくてたまらなかった。

Oh! how I wished for my warm, thick cloth, as I stood and trembled.

ジョンが来てくれたらと思ったが、彼は八マイルも歩かなければならなかったので、私は藁の上に横たわり、眠ろうとした。

I wished for John, but he had eight miles to walk, so I lay down in my straw and tried to go to sleep.

しばらくして、ドアのところにジョンの気配がした。私はひどく苦しかったので、低くうめき声を上げた。

After a long while I heard John at the door; I gave a low moan, for I was in great pain.

彼はすぐに私のそばにやって来て、かがみ込んだ。

He was at my side in a moment, stooping down by me.

私は自分の気持ちを伝えることができなかったが、彼はすべてを分かっているようだった。二、三枚の温かい布で私を包んでから、熱いお湯を取りに家へ走って行った。

I could not tell him how I felt, but he seemed to know it all; he covered me up with two or three warm cloths, and then ran to the house for some hot water;

彼は温かいお粥を作ってくれた。それを飲むと、私はそのまま眠ってしまったと思う。

he made me some warm gruel, which I drank, and then I think I went to sleep.

ジョンはひどく腹を立てているようだった。彼が何度も何度も独り言を言うのが聞こえた。「馬鹿な子め！馬鹿な子め！」

John seemed to be very much put out. I heard him say to himself over and over again, "Stupid boy! stupid boy!
