馬は今、歩いていた。突然、ジェスロ・バスが振り返り、彼女の心臓は止まりそうになった。

The horse was walking now, and suddenly Jethro Bass faced around, and her heart stood still.

「シ、シンシー、元気かい？」と彼は尋ねた。

"H-how be you, Cynthy?" he asked.

「ごきげんいかが、ジェスロ？」

"How do you do, Jethro?"

森の中でツグミが讃美歌を歌い始め、二人は耳を傾けた。

A thrush in the woods began to sing a hymn, and they listened.

その後、しばらくの沈黙が続いた。歌に誘われた鳥たちの返歌、牧師の馬が茂みをかじる音だけが聞こえた。

After that a silence, save for the notes of answering birds quickened by the song, the minister's horse nibbling at the bushes.

シンシア自身、なぜ自分がここに留まっているのか説明できなかった。

Cynthia herself could not have explained why she lingered.

突然、彼は彼女に質問を投げかけた。

Suddenly he shot a question at her.

「どこへ行くんだい？」

"Where be you goin'?"

「ブランプトンへ。ルクレシア先生にこの本を替えてもらいに」と言って、彼女は膝の上から本を持ち上げて見せた。それはとても大きな本だった。

"To Brampton, to get Miss Lucretia to change this book," and she held it up from her lap. It was a very large book.

「な、何の本だい」と彼は尋ねた。

"Wh-what's it about," he demanded.

「ナポレオン・ボナパルトです。」

"Napoleon Bonaparte."

「誰だそれは？」

"Who was be?"

「とても強い人物です。貧しく無名の身から人生を始め、戦い抜いて上り詰め、ついに世界を征服したんです。」

"He was a very strong man. He began life poor and unknown, and fought his way upward until he conquered the world."

「せ、世界を征服した、とあなたは言ったのか？世界を征服した？」

"C-conquered the world, did you say? Conquered the world?"

「ええ。」

"Yes."

ジェスロはじっと考え込んだ。

Jethro pondered.

「その本、どこかおかしいんじゃないか――どこかおかしい。アメリカ合衆国も征服したのか？」

"Guess there's somethin' wrong about that book--somethin' wrong. Conquer the United States?"

シンシアは微笑んだ。当時、アメリカが世界の一部ではないとは、彼女自身気づいていなかった。

Cynthia smiled. She herself did not realize that we were not a part of the world, then.

「彼はヨーロッパを征服しました。王様や女王様がいるところを全て。そして自分自身も王になったのです――皇帝に。」

"He conquered Europe; where all the kings and queens are, and became a king himself--an emperor."

「それは知らなかった！貧しい少年だったと言ったね？」

"I want to-know!" said Jethro. "You said he was a poor boy?"

「ジェスロ、その本を読んでみたらどうですか？」とシンシアは答えた。「きっとルクレシア先生にお借りできるよう頼んであげられますよ。」

"Why don't you read the book, Jethro?" Cynthia answered. "I am sure I can get Miss Lucretia to let you have it."
