But to be stopped on the stairs, to be forced to listen to her trivial, irrelevant gossip, to pestering demands for payment, threats and complaints, and to rack his brains for excuses, to prevaricate, to lie--no, rather than that, he would creep down the stairs like a cat and slip out unseen.

하지만 계단에서 붙잡혀, 그녀의 하찮고 쓸데없는 잡담을 억지로 들어야 하고, 집요한 돈 요구와 협박과 불평을 들어야 하며, 변명을 짜내느라 머리를 쥐어짜고, 얼버무리고, 거짓말을 해야 한다면--아니, 차라리 그는 고양이처럼 계단을 살금살금 내려가 아무도 모르게 빠져나가는 편이 나았다.

This evening, however, on coming out into the street, he became acutely aware of his fears.

그러나 이날 저녁, 거리로 나오자 그는 자신의 두려움을 예리하게 의식하게 되었다.

"I want to attempt a thing _like that_ and am frightened by these trifles," he thought, with an odd smile.

"나는 _그런_ 일을 시도하려 하면서 이런 사소한 것들에 겁을 먹고 있다니," 그는 묘한 미소를 지으며 생각했다.

"Hm... yes, all is in a man's hands and he lets it all slip from cowardice, that's an axiom.

"흠... 그래, 모든 것은 사람의 손에 달려 있는데 비겁함 때문에 다 놓쳐버리는 거야, 그건 자명한 이치지.

It would be interesting to know what it is men are most afraid of.

사람들이 가장 두려워하는 것이 무엇인지 알면 흥미로울 텐데.

Taking a new step, uttering a new word is what they fear most.... But I am talking too much.

새로운 발걸음을 내딛는 것, 새로운 말을 내뱉는 것, 그것이 그들이 가장 두려워하는 것이야.... 하지만 나는 말이 너무 많군.

It's because I chatter that I do nothing.

내가 아무것도 하지 않는 건 떠들어대기 때문이야.

Or perhaps it is that I chatter because I do nothing.

아니면 아무것도 하지 않기 때문에 떠들어대는 건지도 몰라.

I've learned to chatter this last month, lying for days together in my den thinking... of Jack the Giant-killer.

지난 한 달 동안 굴속에 며칠씩 누워서... 거인을 죽인 잭에 대해 생각하면서 떠들어대는 법을 배웠지.

Why am I going there now? Am I capable of _that_? Is _that_ serious?

지금 왜 거기로 가는 거지? 내가 _그것_을 할 수 있을까? _그것_이 진지한 일인가?

It is not serious at all. It's simply a fantasy to amuse myself; a plaything! Yes, maybe it is a plaything.

전혀 진지하지 않아. 그저 나 자신을 즐겁게 하려는 공상에 불과해; 장난감 같은 거지! 그래, 어쩌면 그건 장난감일지도 몰라.
