Next year the turn came to _Boots_; but when he made ready to go, the other two began to laugh and to make game of him, saying:

"You're just the man to watch the hay, that you are; you, who have done nothing all your life but sit in the ashes and toast yourself by the fire."
"네가 딱 건초를 지키기에 알맞은 사람이지, 그렇고말고. 평생 잿더미에 앉아 불 옆에서 몸이나 쬐는 것밖에 한 일이 없는 네가 말이야."
But _Boots_ did not care a pin for their chattering, and stumped away as evening grew on, up the hill-side to the outlying field.
하지만 _막내_는 그들의 수다 따위는 전혀 신경 쓰지 않고, 저녁이 깊어 가자 언덕을 올라 외딴 들판을 향해 터벅터벅 걸어갔다.
There he went inside the barn and lay down; but in about an hour's time the barn began to groan and creak, so that it was dreadful to hear.
그는 헛간 안으로 들어가 드러누웠다. 그런데 한 시간쯤 지나자 헛간이 으르렁거리고 삐걱거리기 시작하더니, 그 소리가 무시무시할 정도였다.
"Well," said _Boots_ to himself, "if it isn't worse than this, I can stand it well enough."
"글쎄," _막내_는 혼자 중얼거렸다. "이보다 더 심하지 않다면, 충분히 견딜 수 있어."
A little while after came another creak and an earthquake, so that the litter in the barn flew about the lad's ears.
조금 후에 또다시 삐걱거리는 소리와 함께 지진이 일어나, 헛간 안의 지푸라기들이 소년의 귓가에서 마구 날아다녔다.
"Oh!" said _Boots_ to himself, "if it isn't worse than this, I daresay I can stand it out."
"오!" _막내_는 혼자 중얼거렸다. "이보다 더 심하지 않다면, 아마 끝까지 버틸 수 있을 거야."
But just then came a third rumbling, and a third earthquake, so that the lad thought walls and roof were coming down on his head; but it passed off, and all was still as death about him.
그런데 바로 그때 세 번째 굉음과 세 번째 지진이 찾아와, 소년은 벽과 지붕이 자기 머리 위로 무너져 내리는 줄만 알았다. 그러나 이내 잠잠해지더니, 주위가 죽은 듯이 고요해졌다.
