He strolled out to the pier and watched the last ropes cast loose.

배는 크지 않았고, 어둠 속에서도 낡고 허름해 보였다.

The ship was not large, and even in the dark it seemed dingy and dilapidated.

그는 크든 작든 이 배가 선원들을 세상의 어느 먼 곳으로 데려갈 것이며, 그래서 가고 싶은 곳으로 향할 것이라고 짐작했다.

He guessed that, big or small, this boat would carry her crew to some distant quarter of the world, and therefore to a place to be desired.

갑판에서 강한 목소리가 명령을 내렸다. 쇠와 쇠가 부딪히는 듯한 울림이 있는 거칠고 단단한 목소리였다.

A strong voice gave an order from the deck--a hard voice with a ring in it like the striking of iron against iron.

해리건은 깜짝 놀라 알아보며 위를 올려다보았고, 흔들리는 랜턴 불빛에 맥티를 발견했다.

Harrigan glanced up with a start of recognition, and by the light of a swinging lantern he saw McTee.

맥티가 지휘를 맡고 있다면, 이 배는 분명 먼 항구로 향하는 것이었다.

If he were in command, this ship was certainly going to a far port.

부두와 배 사이에 검은 물이 보였다.

Black water showed between the dock and the ship.

조금만 더 있으면 손이 닿지 않는 곳으로 멀어질 것이었고, 그 생각이 해리건의 마음을 결정지었다.

In a moment more it would be beyond reach, and that thought decided Harrigan.

He made a few paces back, noted the aperture in the rail of the ship where the gangplank was being drawn in, then ran at full speed and leaped high in the air.

난간에 있던 선원 세 명은 해리건이 갱플랭크 끝에 부딪혀 비틀거리다가 무릎을 꿇으며 앞으로 쓰러지자 놀라움에 소리쳤다.

The three sailors at the rail shouted their astonishment as Harrigan struck the edge of the gangplank, reeled, and then pitched forward to his knees.

그는 일어나 높은 담에서 땅으로 뛰어내린 고양이처럼 몸을 털었다.

He rose and shook himself like a cat that has dropped from a high fence to the ground.

"당신은 누구요?"

"What're you?"

"저는 추가 선원입니다."

"I'm the extra hand."

그리고 해리건은 브리지로 가는 계단을 뛰어올라갔다. 그곳에서 그는 맥티와 일등 항해사, 이등 항해사를 만났다.

And Harrigan ran up the steps to the bridge. There he found McTee with the first and second mates.
