هذا التصميم الواسع لغيبون، والكلّ الرائع الذي صبّ فيه انحلال وخراب الحضارة القديمة، وتشكّل ونشأة النظام الجديد للأشياء، سيجعل بحدّ ذاته، بمعزل عن التنفيذ الدؤوب لخطّته الهائلة، كتاب «الانحدار والسقوط للإمبراطورية الرومانية» موضوعًا لا يمكن الاقتراب منه بالنسبة للمؤرّخ المستقبلي:

This vast design of Gibbon, the magnificent whole into which he has cast the decay and ruin of the ancient civilization, the formation and birth of the new order of things, will of itself, independent of the laborious execution of his immense plan, render "The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire" an unapproachable subject to the future historian:

كما يقول بلاغةً محرّره الفرنسي الأخير، السيد غيزو:

هرم العالم القديم، ومشهد مجده المحتضر وأخلاقه المنحطّة؛

the decrepitude of the ancient world, the spectacle of its expiring glory and degenerate manners;

طفولة العالم الحديث، وصورة تقدّمه الأوّل، والوجهة الجديدة التي أُعطيت لعقل الإنسان وطابعه—

the infancy of the modern world, the picture of its first progress, of the new direction given to the mind and character of man—

مثل هذا الموضوع لا بدّ أن يشدّ الانتباه ويثير اهتمام البشر، الذين لا يستطيعون أن يتأمّلوا بلا مبالاة تلك العصور الخالدة، التي يقول فيها كورنيي بلغته الرفيعة—

such a subject must necessarily fix the attention and excite the interest of men, who cannot behold with indifference those memorable epochs, during which, in the fine language of Corneille—

'مصير عظيم يبدأ، ومصير عظيم ينتهي.'

'Un grand destin commence, un grand destin s'achève.
