The dry season arrived the way it always did — not suddenly, but by degrees, the mornings growing sharper and more golden until one day you realized the rains had been gone for weeks and the garden had quietly rearranged itself around their absence.

The frangipani near the front gate lost some of its smaller leaves and concentrated its energy into blooms, great waxy clusters of white and pale yellow that fell onto the path each morning and had to be swept before the heat sealed them to the stone.
