The garden steamed gently in the early dark, and the frangipani smell was very strong, the way it always was after rain.
Someone down the street was burning wood.
The air held it all: wet earth, flower, smoke, food.
Malee filled Nipa's bowl a second time without being asked.
"You will need to do very well on the entrance examination," she said.
Nipa looked up.
"I know."
"I will make sure you have time to study."
This was all she said.
It was enough.
Nipa knew her mother, and she understood that this was love in its practical form — not the love that holds on, but the love that clears space.
She looked down at her bowl, and there was a moment when her face did something complicated and then resolved into ordinary composure, and Malee, who had been watching, looked away to give her the privacy of it.
Below them, Khao lifted his head once toward the gate — a reflex, a listening — then set it back down on Nipa's foot and closed his eyes.
