Moths circled the light above the table.
Khao lay between their chairs with his chin on Nipa's foot.
"You'll call," Malee said.
It was not a question.
"Every week," Nipa said.
"More if you want."
"Every week is fine."
Malee spooned more rice onto her plate even though she wasn't particularly hungry.
"Your aunt has left her number with me.
If you need something and you can't reach me."
"I know."
"The school has a nurse's station."
"Mae. I know."
Malee looked out at the garden.
The mango tree was dark against the darker sky, and the remaining branches made a shape that was familiar and strange at the same time, the way the tree had looked different since losing its limbs, altered in some structural way she hadn't quite adjusted to.
"He'll miss you," she said.
Nipa looked down at Khao.
He was looking up at her already, as if he had been waiting to be mentioned.
"Take care of him," she said.
"He doesn't need to be taken care of.
He takes care of himself."
But Malee said it gently, without contradiction, and after a moment she added: "I'll tell him when you call.
He knows your voice."
"You tell him things?"
"Somebody has to."
Malee picked up her glass.
"He's a good listener.
Better than most people."
Nipa laughed, and the laugh surprised her — it was smaller than she expected, and warmer, and it held something she couldn't quite name yet because she was seventeen and the language for it wouldn't come until much later, until she was standing in a different city in a different season and understood for the first time what it meant to have left something whole and unbroken behind you.
The moths continued their slow circling.
