That when a thing lies still, unlesse somewhat els stirre it, it will lye still for ever, is a truth that no man doubts of.

一件静止的东西，除非有别的什么来推动它，否则它将永远静止，这是一个无人置疑的真理。

But that when a thing is in motion, it will eternally be in motion, unless somewhat els stay it, though the reason be the same, (namely, that nothing can change it selfe,) is not so easily assented to.

但是，一件运动中的东西，除非有别的什么来阻止它，否则它将永远运动下去，尽管道理是一样的（即没有什么东西能够自行改变自身），这一点却不那么容易被人接受。

For men measure, not onely other men, but all other things, by themselves: and because they find themselves subject after motion to pain, and lassitude, think every thing els growes weary of motion, and seeks repose of its own accord;

因为人们不仅以自身来衡量其他人，也以自身来衡量一切事物：由于他们发现自己在运动之后会感到疼痛与疲乏，便认为其他一切事物也会对运动感到厌倦，并自发地寻求休息；

little considering, whether it be not some other motion, wherein that desire of rest they find in themselves, consisteth.

From hence it is, that the Schooles say, Heavy bodies fall downwards, out of an appetite to rest, and to conserve their nature in that place which is most proper for them;

正是由此出发，经院哲学家们才会说，重物向下坠落，是出于对休息的欲求，以及在最适合自身的地方保存其本性的欲求；

ascribing appetite, and Knowledge of what is good for their conservation, (which is more than man has) to things inanimate absurdly.

荒谬地将欲求以及对何者有益于自身保存的认知（这甚至超出了人所具备的能力）赋予了无生命的事物。
