인간의 사고에 관하여, 나는 먼저 그것들을 개별적으로 고찰하고, 이후에는 연속적으로, 즉 서로 간의 의존 관계 속에서 고찰할 것이다.

Concerning the Thoughts of man, I will consider them first Singly, and afterwards in Trayne, or dependance upon one another.

개별적으로 보면, 사고 하나하나는 우리 외부에 있는 어떤 물체의 성질이나 그 밖의 속성에 대한 표상 또는 현상이며, 이를 흔히 대상이라고 부른다.

Singly, they are every one a Representation or Apparence, of some quality, or other Accident of a body without us; which is commonly called an Object.

이 대상은 눈, 귀, 그리고 인간 신체의 다른 부위들에 작용하며, 작용 방식의 다양성에 따라 다양한 현상을 만들어 낸다.

Which Object worketh on the Eyes, Eares, and other parts of mans body; and by diversity of working, produceth diversity of Apparences.

그것들 모두의 근원은 우리가 감각이라고 부르는 것이다. 왜냐하면 인간의 마음속에 있는 어떤 관념도 처음에 전체적으로든 부분적으로든 감각 기관을 통해 생겨나지 않은 것은 없기 때문이다.

The Originall of them all, is that which we call Sense; (For there is no conception in a mans mind, which hath not at first, totally, or by parts, been begotten upon the organs of Sense.)

나머지 모든 것은 그 근원으로부터 파생된다.

The rest are derived from that originall.

감각의 자연적 원인을 아는 것은 지금 다루고 있는 주제에 반드시 필요한 것은 아니며, 나는 이미 다른 곳에서 이에 대해 상세히 서술한 바 있다.

To know the naturall cause of Sense, is not very necessary to the business now in hand; and I have els-where written of the same at large.

그럼에도 불구하고, 나의 현재 논술의 각 부분을 충실히 채우기 위해, 이 자리에서 그것을 간략히 서술하겠다.

Nevertheless, to fill each part of my present method, I will briefly deliver the same in this place.

감각의 원인은 외부의 물체 또는 대상으로서, 이것이 각각의 감각에 고유한 기관을 압박하는데, 미각과 촉각에서처럼 직접적으로 작용하거나, 시각·청각·후각에서처럼 간접적으로 작용한다.

The cause of Sense, is the Externall Body, or Object, which presseth the organ proper to each Sense, either immediatly, as in the Tast and Touch; or mediately, as in Seeing, Hearing, and Smelling:

이 압박은 신경과 신체의 다른 섬유 및 막을 통해 뇌와 심장 안쪽으로 계속 전달되어, 거기서 저항 또는 반압, 즉 스스로를 해방하려는 심장의 노력을 불러일으킨다.

which pressure, by the mediation of Nerves, and other strings, and membranes of the body, continued inwards to the Brain, and Heart, causeth there a resistance, or counter-pressure, or endeavour of the heart, to deliver it self:

이 노력은 바깥을 향하기 때문에, 외부에 어떤 물질이 있는 것처럼 보이게 된다.

which endeavour because Outward, seemeth to be some matter without.
