彼の中に宿る神聖な精神に仕えるために、人は「あらゆる激しい情念と邪悪な感情、あらゆる軽率さと虚栄心、そして神々や人々に対するあらゆる不満から自らを清く保たなければならない」。

To serve the divine spirit which is implanted within him, a man must 'keep himself pure from all violent passion and evil affection, from all rashness and vanity, and from all manner of discontent, either in regard of the gods or men'.

Or, as he says elsewhere, 'unspotted by pleasure, undaunted by pain.'

過ちを犯した者には怒りではなく憐れみが必要であり、矯正を要する者には機転と穏やかさをもって接するべきであり、より良いことを学ぶ心構えを常に持っていなければならない。

The offender needs pity, not wrath; those who must needs be corrected, should be treated with tact and gentleness; and one must be always ready to learn better.

「最善の復讐とは、彼らのようになってしまわないことである」。

'The best kind of revenge is, not to become like unto them.'

There are so many hints of offence forgiven, that we may believe the notes followed sharp on the facts.
