By and by he came to an old stump of a tree which was hollow and had the nicest little round hole in one side.

Jimmy Skunk took hold of one edge with his two little black paws and pulled and pulled.

ジミー・スカンクは二本の小さな黒い前足で端をつかんで、ぐいぐいと引っ張りました。

All of a sudden the whole side of the old stump tore open and Jimmy Skunk fell flat on his back.

When Jimmy Skunk had rolled over onto his feet again there was Striped Chipmunk hopping up and down right in the middle of the path, he was so angry.

ジミー・スカンクがころりと転がって再び立ち上がると、しましまのシマリスが怒りのあまり、道のちょうど真ん中でぴょんぴょんと跳び回っていました。

"Good morning, Striped Chipmunk," said Jimmy Skunk. "Have you seen any beetles?"

「おはよう、シマリスくん」とジミー・スカンクは言いました。「カブトムシを見かけなかったかい？」

But Striped Chipmunk hopped faster than ever and he said: "What do you mean, Jimmy Skunk, by pulling the side off my house?"

しかしシマリスはいっそう速くぴょんぴょん跳ねながら言いました。「どういうつもりなの、ジミー・スカンク、僕の家の側面を引っぺがすなんて？」

"Is that the side of your house?" asked Jimmy Skunk, politely. "I won't do it again."

「あれが君の家の側面だったの？」とジミー・スカンクは丁寧に尋ねました。「もうしないよ。」

Then Jimmy Skunk stepped right over Striped Chipmunk, and went on up the Crooked Little Path to look for some beetles.

それからジミー・スカンクはシマリスをひょいとまたいで、カブトムシを探しながら曲がりくねった小道を登っていきました。

Pretty soon he met Peter Rabbit hopping along down the Crooked Little Path.

まもなく彼は、曲がりくねった小道をぴょんぴょんと下ってくるピーター・ラビットに出会いました。

"Good morning, Jimmy Skunk, where are you going so early in the morning?" said Peter Rabbit.

「おはよう、ジミー・スカンク、こんな朝早くどこへ行くの？」とピーター・ラビットは言いました。

"Good morning, Peter Rabbit. Have you seen any beetles?" asked Jimmy Skunk, politely.

「おはよう、ピーター・ラビット。カブトムシを見かけなかったかい？」とジミー・スカンクは丁寧に尋ねました。

"No, I haven't seen any beetles, but I'll help you find some," said Peter Rabbit.

「いいや、カブトムシは見ていないけど、一緒に探してあげるよ」とピーター・ラビットは言いました。

So he turned about and hopped ahead of Jimmy Skunk up the Crooked Little Path.

そこで彼は向きを変えて、ジミー・スカンクの前を跳びながら曲がりくねった小道を上っていきました。
