"Pedro me arrojó el brazo", dijo él, haciendo una mueca de dolor, "a un cocodrilo que pasaba por allí."

"Peter flung my arm," he said, wincing, "to a crocodile that happened to be passing by."

"Muchas veces", dijo Smee, "he notado tu extraño terror a los cocodrilos."

"I have often," said Smee, "noticed your strange dread of crocodiles."

"No a los cocodrilos", lo corrigió Garfio, "sino a ese cocodrilo en particular."

"Not of crocodiles," Hook corrected him, "but of that one crocodile."

Bajó la voz.

He lowered his voice.

"Le gustó tanto mi brazo, Smee, que me ha seguido desde entonces, de mar en mar y de tierra en tierra, relamiéndose los labios por el resto de mí."

"It liked my arm so much, Smee, that it has followed me ever since, from sea to sea and from land to land, licking its lips for the rest of me."

"En cierto modo", dijo Smee, "es una especie de cumplido."

"In a way," said Smee, "it's sort of a compliment."

"No quiero semejantes cumplidos", ladró Garfio con petulancia.

"I want no such compliments," Hook barked petulantly.

"Quiero a Peter Pan, quien primero le dio a esa bestia el gusto por mí."

"I want Peter Pan, who first gave the brute its taste for me."

Se sentó en un gran hongo, y ahora había un temblor en su voz.

He sat down on a large mushroom, and now there was a quiver in his voice.

"Smee", dijo con voz ronca, "ese cocodrilo ya me habría atrapado, pero por una feliz casualidad se tragó un reloj que hace tictac en su interior, y así, antes de que pueda alcanzarme, oigo el tictac y huyo."

"Smee," he said huskily, "that crocodile would have had me before this, but by a lucky chance it swallowed a clock which goes tick tick inside it, and so before it can reach me I hear the tick and bolt."

Se rió, pero de manera hueca.

He laughed, but in a hollow way.

"Algún día", dijo Smee, "el reloj se parará, y entonces te agarrará."

"Some day," said Smee, "the clock will run down, and then he'll get you."

Garfio humedeció sus labios resecos.

Hook wetted his dry lips.

"Sí", dijo, "ese es el miedo que me atormenta."

"Ay," he said, "that's the fear that haunts me."

Desde que se había sentado, había sentido un calor extraño.

Since sitting down he had felt curiously warm.

"Smee", dijo, "este asiento está caliente."

"Smee," he said, "this seat is hot."

Se levantó de un salto.

He jumped up.

"¡Por todos los demonios, me estoy quemando!"

"Odds bobs, hammer and tongs I'm burning."
