Ella había venido a salvarlo, a darle su nido, aunque había huevos en él.

She had come to save him, to give him her nest, though there were eggs in it.

Me sorprende bastante el pájaro, pues aunque él había sido amable con ella, también a veces la había atormentado.

I rather wonder at the bird, for though he had been nice to her, he had also sometimes tormented her.

Solo puedo suponer que, al igual que la señora Darling y los demás, ella se ablandó porque él tenía todos sus primeros dientes.

I can suppose only that, like Mrs. Darling and the rest of them, she was melted because he had all his first teeth.

Ella le gritó para qué había venido, y él le gritó qué estaba haciendo allí; pero, por supuesto, ninguno de los dos entendía el idioma del otro.

She called out to him what she had come for, and he called out to her what she was doing there; but of course neither of them understood the other's language.

En los cuentos fantásticos la gente puede hablar libremente con los pájaros, y desearía por un momento poder fingir que este fuera uno de esos cuentos, y decir que Peter le respondió con inteligencia al pájaro que Nunca Regresa; pero la verdad es lo mejor, y solo quiero contarles lo que realmente ocurrió.

In fanciful stories people can talk to the birds freely, and I wish for the moment I could pretend that this were such a story, and say that Peter replied intelligently to the Never bird; but truth is best, and I want to tell you only what really happened.

Pues bien, no solo no podían entenderse el uno al otro, sino que además olvidaron sus modales.

Well, not only could they not understand each other, but they forgot their manners.

«Quiero que te metas en el nido», llamó el pájaro, hablando tan despacio y claramente como le era posible, «y entonces puedes dejarte llevar hasta la orilla, pero estoy demasiado cansada para acercarlo más, así que tienes que intentar nadar hasta él».

"I—want—you—to—get—into—the—nest," the bird called, speaking as slowly and distinctly as possible, "and—then—you—can—drift—ashore, but—I—am—too—tired—to—bring—it—any—nearer—so—you—must—try to—swim—to—it."

«¿De qué estás graznando?» respondió Peter. «¿Por qué no dejas que el nido se mueva con la corriente como de costumbre?»

"What are you quacking about?" Peter answered. "Why don't you let the nest drift as usual?"

«Quiero que tú—» dijo el pájaro, y lo repitió todo de nuevo.

"I—want—you—" the bird said, and repeated it all over.

Entonces Peter lo intentó despacio y claramente.

Then Peter tried slow and distinct.

«¿De—qué—estás—graznando?» y así sucesivamente.

"What—are—you—quacking—about?" and so on.

El pájaro que Nunca Regresa se irritó; tienen un genio muy corto.

The Never bird became irritated; they have very short tempers.

«¡Cabeza de chorlito!» gritó ella, «¿Por qué no haces lo que te digo?»

"You dunderheaded little jay!" she screamed, "Why don't you do as I tell you?

though: Aunque, a pesar de cierta condición o circunstancia.
eggs: Huevos, óvulos de aves u otros animales.
rather: Bastante, en cierta medida; preferiblemente.

drift: Derivar, moverse sin control arrastrado por corriente.

jay: Arrendajo, tipo de pájaro; insulto informal en inglés.
screamed: Gritó, emitió un grito fuerte de emoción intensa.
