「アイロンをかけるべきだったかな」とウェンディは物思いにふけりながら言った。

"Perhaps I should have ironed it," Wendy said thoughtfully,

しかしピーターは、男の子らしく、外見など気にしなかった。

but Peter, boylike, was indifferent to appearances,

彼は今、この上なく喜んで飛び跳ねていた。

and he was now jumping about in the wildest glee.

ああ、彼はもう、自分の幸せをウェンディのおかげだということを忘れていた。

Alas, he had already forgotten that he owed his bliss to Wendy.

彼は自分で影をつけたのだと思っていた。

He thought he had attached the shadow himself.

「なんて僕は賢いんだ！」と彼は有頂天になって叫んだ。「ああ、この僕の賢さときたら！」

"How clever I am!" he crowed rapturously, "oh, the cleverness of me!"

ピーターのこの自惚れが、彼の最も魅力的な特質のひとつだったと白状しなければならないのは、まったく情けないことである。

It is humiliating to have to confess that this conceit of Peter was one of his most fascinating qualities.

ずけずけと言ってしまえば、これほど生意気な男の子はかつていなかったのだ。

To put it with brutal frankness, there never was a cockier boy.

しかしその瞬間、ウェンディはあきれてしまった。「なんて自惚れ屋なの」と彼女は恐ろしいほどの皮肉を込めて叫んだ。「もちろん、私は何もしていないってこと！」

But for the moment Wendy was shocked. "You conceit," she exclaimed, with frightful sarcasm; "of course I did nothing!"

「少しはやってくれたよ」とピーターはそっけなく言い、踊り続けた。

"You did a little," Peter said carelessly, and continued to dance.

「少しですって！」と彼女は気位高く言い返した。「役に立たないなら、せめて引っ込みますわ」

"A little!" she replied with hauteur; "if I am no use I can at least withdraw,"

そして彼女はできるかぎり気品のある様子でベッドに飛び込み、毛布で顔を覆った。

and she sprang in the most dignified way into bed and covered her face with the blankets.

彼女に顔を上げさせようと、彼は帰ろうとするふりをした。それが失敗すると、ベッドの端に腰かけて、足で彼女をそっと叩いた。

To induce her to look up he pretended to be going away, and when this failed he sat on the end of the bed and tapped her gently with his foot.

「ウェンディ」と彼は言った。「引っ込まないで。自分のことが誇らしい時は、どうしても自慢せずにいられないんだ、ウェンディ。」

"Wendy," he said, "don't withdraw. I can't help crowing, Wendy, when I'm pleased with myself."

Still she would not look up, though she was listening eagerly.

「ウェンディ」と彼はどんな女性も抗うことのできない声で続けた。「ウェンディ、女の子が一人いれば、男の子が二十人いるよりずっと役に立つんだよ。」

"Wendy," he continued, in a voice that no woman has ever yet been able to resist, "Wendy, one girl is more use than twenty boys.
