ピーターほど陽気に見える人はいなかったし、彼の笑い声は最もかわいらしいくすくす笑いだった。彼はまだ最初の笑い声を持っていた。

No one could ever look quite so merry as Peter, and the loveliest of gurgles was his laugh. He had his first laugh still.

「ウェンディ」と彼は嬉しそうにささやいた。「僕、引き出しに彼女を閉じ込めてしまったと思う！」

"Wendy," he whispered gleefully, "I do believe I shut her up in the drawer!"

彼はかわいそうなティンクを引き出しから出してやると、彼女は怒りの悲鳴を上げながら子供部屋を飛び回った。

He let poor Tink out of the drawer, and she flew about the nursery screaming with fury.

「そんなことを言うものじゃないよ」とピーターは言い返した。「もちろんとても申し訳なかったけど、君が引き出しの中にいるなんてどうして分かるんだい？」

"You shouldn't say such things," Peter retorted. "Of course I'm very sorry, but how could I know you were in the drawer?"

ウェンディは彼の話を聞いていなかった。「ああ、ピーター」と彼女は叫んだ。「彼女がじっと立っていてくれたら、見えるのに！」

Wendy was not listening to him. "O Peter," she cried, "if she would only stand still and let me see her!"

「彼女たちはほとんど立ち止まらないんだ」と彼は言ったが、一瞬ウェンディは、その夢のような姿が鳩時計の上に降り立つのを見た。「なんてきれいなの！」と彼女は叫んだ。ティンクの顔はまだ激しい怒りで歪んでいたが。

"They hardly ever stand still," he said, but for one moment Wendy saw the romantic figure come to rest on the cuckoo clock. "O the lovely!" she cried, though Tink's face was still distorted with passion.

「ティンク」とピーターは穏やかに言った。「このお嬢さんは、君が自分の妖精になってくれたらいいのにと言っているよ。」

"Tink," said Peter amiably, "this lady says she wishes you were her fairy."

ティンカー・ベルは無礼な返事をした。

Tinker Bell answered insolently.

「彼女は何て言っているの、ピーター？」

"What does she say, Peter?"

彼は翻訳しなければならなかった。「あまり礼儀正しくないんだ。君のことを大きくて醜い女の子と言って、自分こそが僕の妖精だと言っているよ。」

He had to translate. "She is not very polite. She says you are a great ugly girl, and that she is my fairy."

彼はティンクと言い争おうとした。「ティンク、君は僕の妖精にはなれないって分かっているだろう。僕は紳士で、君は淑女なんだから。」

He tried to argue with Tink. "You know you can't be my fairy, Tink, because I am a gentleman and you are a lady."

これに対してティンクは「このばか者」と言って、浴室に消えてしまった。「彼女はかなり普通の妖精なんだ」とピーターは申し訳なさそうに説明した。「彼女はポットやケトルを修理するから、ティンカー・ベルと呼ばれているんだよ。」

To this Tink replied in these words, "You silly ass," and disappeared into the bathroom. "She is quite a common fairy," Peter explained apologetically, "she is called Tinker Bell because she mends the pots and kettles."
