「返してほしいだろうと思って」と彼はやや苦々しく言い、指ぬきを返そうとした。

"I thought you would want it back," he said a little bitterly, and offered to return her the thimble.

「まあ」と優しいウェンディは言った。「キスのことじゃないわ、指ぬきのことよ。」

"Oh dear," said the nice Wendy, "I don't mean a kiss, I mean a thimble."

「それって何？」

"What's that?"

「こういうことよ。」彼女は彼にキスをした。

"It's like this." She kissed him.

「おかしいな！」とピーターは真顔で言った。「じゃあ、僕も君に指ぬきをあげようか？」

"Funny!" said Peter gravely. "Now shall I give you a thimble?"

「もしそうしたいなら」とウェンディは言い、今度はしっかりと頭をまっすぐに保った。

"If you wish to," said Wendy, keeping her head erect this time.

ピーターは彼女に指ぬきをし、するとほぼ同時に彼女は悲鳴を上げた。「どうしたの、ウェンディ？」

Peter thimbled her, and almost immediately she screeched. "What is it, Wendy?"

「まるで誰かが髪を引っ張ったみたいだったわ。」

"It was exactly as if someone were pulling my hair."

「それはティンクに違いない。あの子があんなにいたずらをするのを見たことがなかった。」

"That must have been Tink. I never knew her so naughty before."

そして実際、ティンクはまた飛び回り、ひどい言葉を使っていた。

And indeed Tink was darting about again, using offensive language.

「ティンクは、僕が君に指ぬきをするたびに、毎回そうしてやると言っているよ、ウェンディ。」

"She says she will do that to you, Wendy, every time I give you a thimble."

「でも、なぜ？」

"But why?"

「なぜなの、ティンク？」

"Why, Tink?"

またティンクは「このおばかさん」と答えた。ピーターにはその理由が分からなかったが、ウェンディには分かった。そして彼が、子ども部屋の窓に来たのは彼女に会いたかったからではなく、お話を聞きたかったからだと認めたとき、彼女はほんの少しがっかりした。

Again Tink replied, "You silly ass." Peter could not understand why, but Wendy understood, and she was just slightly disappointed when he admitted that he came to the nursery window not to see her but to listen to stories.

「僕はお話を一つも知らないんだ。迷子の仲間たちも誰もお話を知らない。」

"You see, I don't know any stories. None of the lost boys knows any stories."

「それはひどすぎるわ」とウェンディは言った。

"How perfectly awful," Wendy said.

「ねえ、知ってる？」とピーターは聞いた。「なぜツバメは家の軒に巣を作るか。お話を聞くためなんだよ。ああ、ウェンディ、君のお母さんがとても素敵なお話をしてくれていたよ。」

"Do you know," Peter asked "why swallows build in the eaves of houses? It is to listen to the stories. O Wendy, your mother was telling you such a lovely story."
