「人魚！尻尾がある？」

"Mermaids! With tails?"

「こんなに長い尻尾なんだ。」

"Such long tails."

「まあ」とウェンディは叫んだ。「人魚を見てみたい！」

"Oh," cried Wendy, "to see a mermaid!"

彼はひどく狡猾になっていた。「ウェンディ」と彼は言った。「みんながどれほど君を尊敬するか。」

He had become frightfully cunning. "Wendy," he said, "how we should all respect you."

彼女は困惑して体をくねらせていた。まるで子供部屋の床にとどまろうとしているかのようだった。

She was wriggling her body in distress. It was quite as if she were trying to remain on the nursery floor.

しかし彼は彼女に少しも同情しなかった。

But he had no pity for her.

「ウェンディ」とずる賢い彼は言った。「夜、僕たちを寝かしつけてくれるだろう。」

"Wendy," he said, the sly one, "you could tuck us in at night."

「まあ！」

"Oo!"

「僕たちの誰も、夜に寝かしつけてもらったことがないんだ。」

"None of us has ever been tucked in at night."

「まあ！」と言って、彼女は両腕を彼に向けて伸ばした。

"Oo," and her arms went out to him.

「それに、僕たちの服を繕って、ポケットも作ってくれるだろう。僕たちの誰もポケットを持っていないんだ。」

"And you could darn our clothes, and make pockets for us. None of us has any pockets."

どうして断れようか。「もちろん、これはとてもすてきだわ！」と彼女は叫んだ。「ピーター、ジョンとマイケルにも飛び方を教えてくれる？」

How could she resist. "Of course it's awfully fascinating!" she cried. "Peter, would you teach John and Michael to fly too?"

「君さえよければ」と彼はそっけなく言い、彼女はジョンとマイケルのところへ走って行き、二人を揺り起こした。「起きて」と彼女は叫んだ。「ピーター・パンが来たのよ。飛び方を教えてくれるって。」

"If you like," he said indifferently, and she ran to John and Michael and shook them. "Wake up," she cried, "Peter Pan has come and he is to teach us to fly."

ジョンは目をこすった。「じゃあ、起きよう」と彼は言った。もちろん彼はすでに床の上にいた。「やあ」と彼は言った。「もう起きてる！」

John rubbed his eyes. "Then I shall get up," he said. Of course he was on the floor already. "Hallo," he said, "I am up!"

マイケルもその頃には起き上がっており、六枚の刃とのこぎりを持つナイフのように鋭い顔つきをしていた。しかしピーターが突然、静かにするよう合図した。三人の顔は、大人の世界からの物音に耳をすます子供たちの、あの恐ろしいほどの抜け目なさを帯びた。あたりは塩のように静まり返っていた。そして、すべては大丈夫だった。いや、待って！すべてが違った。

Michael was up by this time also, looking as sharp as a knife with six blades and a saw, but Peter suddenly signed silence. Their faces assumed the awful craftiness of children listening for sounds from the grown-up world. All was as still as salt. Then everything was right. No, stop! Everything was wrong.
