不思議なことに、彼らは皆すぐにそれを認識した。そして恐怖が訪れるまでの間、彼らはそれを長い間夢見てようやく目にしたものとしてではなく、休暇で帰省する懐かしい友人として歓迎した。

Strange to say, they all recognized it at once, and until fear fell upon them they hailed it, not as something long dreamt of and seen at last, but as a familiar friend to whom they were returning home for the holidays.

「ジョン、あそこにラグーンがあるよ。」

"John, there's the lagoon."

「ウェンディ、亀が砂に卵を埋めているのを見て。」

"Wendy, look at the turtles burying their eggs in the sand."

「ねえ、ジョン、足の折れたフラミンゴが見えるよ！」

"I say, John, I see your flamingo with the broken leg!"

「見て、マイケル、あそこに君の洞窟があるよ！」

"Look, Michael, there's your cave!"

「ジョン、茂みの中にあれは何？」

"John, what's that in the brushwood?"

「子連れの狼だよ。ウェンディ、あれが君の子狼だと思うよ！」

"It's a wolf with her whelps. Wendy, I do believe that's your little whelp!"

「ジョン、あそこに私のボートがある、横腹が壊れてるけど！」

"There's my boat, John, with her sides stove in!"

「違うよ。だって、僕たちが君のボートを燃やしたじゃないか。」

"No, it isn't. Why, we burned your boat."

「どちらにしてもあれだよ。ねえ、ジョン、インディアンのキャンプの煙が見えるよ！」

"That's her, at any rate. I say, John, I see the smoke of the redskin camp!"

「どこ？教えてくれれば、煙の立ち上り方で彼らが戦いに出ているかどうか分かるよ。」

"Where? Show me, and I'll tell you by the way smoke curls whether they are on the war-path."

「あそこ、神秘の川のちょうど向こう岸だよ。」

"There, just across the Mysterious River."

「今見えた。そうだね、彼らは確かに戦いに出ているよ。」

"I see now. Yes, they are on the war-path right enough."

ピーターは彼らがそれほど多くのことを知っていることに少々苛立ちを感じた。しかし、彼らの上に君臨しようとするなら、その勝利はすぐそこに迫っていた。なぜなら、やがて彼らに恐怖が訪れたことを私はすでに話したではないか。
