すると本当にマイケルが泣き始め、ジョンでさえしゃくり上げながらしか話せなかった。フックの評判を知っていたからだ。

Then indeed Michael began to cry, and even John could speak in gulps only, for they knew Hook's reputation.

「彼は黒ひげの甲板長だったんだ」とジョンはしわがれた声でささやいた。「あいつは海賊の中で最悪の男だ。バーベキューでさえ恐れた唯一の男なんだ。」

"He was Blackbeard's bo'sun," John whispered huskily. "He is the worst of them all. He is the only man of whom Barbecue was afraid."

「そいつだよ」とピーターは言った。

"That's him," said Peter.

「どんな奴なの？大きいの？」

"What is he like? Is he big?"

「以前ほど大きくはないよ。」

"He is not so big as he was."

「どういう意味？」

"How do you mean?"

「あいつの一部を切り取ったんだ。」

"I cut off a bit of him."

「君が！」

"You!"

「そうさ、僕がね」とピーターはきっぱりと言った。

"Yes, me," said Peter sharply.

「失礼なつもりじゃなかったんだ。」

"I wasn't meaning to be disrespectful."

「ああ、いいよ。」

"Oh, all right."

「でも、どの部分なの？」

"But, I say, what bit?"

「右手だよ。」

"His right hand."

「じゃあ、もう戦えないじゃないか？」

"Then he can't fight now?"

「とんでもない、できるよ！」

"Oh, can't he just!"

「左利き？」

"Left-hander?"

「右手の代わりに鉄のかぎ爪があって、それで引っ掻くんだ。」

"He has an iron hook instead of a right hand, and he claws with it."

「かぎ爪で！」

"Claws!"

「ねえ、ジョン」とピーターは言った。

"I say, John," said Peter.

「何？」

"Yes."

「『はい、船長』と言いなさい。」

"Say, 'Ay, ay, sir.'"

「はい、船長。」

"Ay, ay, sir."

「一つ約束してもらわなければならないことがある」とピーターは続けた。「僕の部下になるすべての男の子が約束しなければならないことだ。君も同じだよ。」

"There is one thing," Peter continued, "that every boy who serves under me has to promise, and so must you."

ジョンは青ざめた。

John paled.

「それはこういうことだ。もし開けた場所でフックと出くわしたら、あいつは僕に任せること。」

"It is this, if we meet Hook in open fight, you must leave him to me."

「約束するよ」とジョンは誠実に言った。

"I promise," John said loyally.

その瞬間、三人は少し不気味さを感じなくなっていた。ティンクが一緒に飛んでいて、その光の中でお互いの姿を見分けることができたからだ。

For the moment they were feeling less eerie, because Tink was flying with them, and in her light they could distinguish each other.
