「二人とも溺れてしまうということ？」

"Do you mean we shall both be drowned?"

「水がどんどん上がってきているのを見てごらん。」

"Look how the water is rising."

二人は目に入る光景を遮ろうと、手で顔を覆った。

They put their hands over their eyes to shut out the sight.

もうすぐ自分たちは消えてしまうだろうと思った。

They thought they would soon be no more.

そうして座っていると、何かがキスのように軽くピーターをかすめ、そこに留まった。まるで遠慮がちに「お役に立てますか？」と言っているかのように。

As they sat thus something brushed against Peter as light as a kiss, and stayed there, as if saying timidly, "Can I be of any use?"

それはマイケルが数日前に作った凧の尻尾だった。

It was the tail of a kite, which Michael had made some days before.

凧はマイケルの手を引き裂いて飛び去っていたのだ。

It had torn itself out of his hand and floated away.

「マイケルの凧だ」とピーターは興味なさそうに言ったが、次の瞬間には尻尾をつかんで、凧を手元に引き寄せていた。

"Michael's kite," Peter said without interest, but next moment he had seized the tail, and was pulling the kite toward him.

「これはマイケルを地面から持ち上げたんだ」と彼は叫んだ。「なぜ君を運べないことがある？」

"It lifted Michael off the ground," he cried; "why should it not carry you?"

「二人とも！」

"Both of us!"

「二人は無理だ。マイケルとカーリーが試してみたから。」

"It can't lift two; Michael and Curly tried."

「くじで決めましょう」とウェンディは勇敢に言った。

"Let us draw lots," Wendy said bravely.

「君は女の子じゃないか。それはできない。」

"And you a lady; never."

ピーターはすでに尻尾を彼女の体に結びつけていた。

Already he had tied the tail round her.

彼女はピーターにしがみつき、彼を置いては行かないと言い張った。しかし「さようなら、ウェンディ」という言葉とともに、彼は彼女を岩から押し出した。そして数分後、彼女の姿はピーターの視界から消えていった。

She clung to him; she refused to go without him; but with a "Good-bye, Wendy," he pushed her from the rock; and in a few minutes she was borne out of his sight.

ピーターはラグーンに一人残された。

Peter was alone on the lagoon.

岩はもうとても小さくなっていた。やがて水に沈んでしまうだろう。

The rock was very small now; soon it would be submerged.

青白い光の筋が水面をそっと渡っていった。やがて、世界でもっとも音楽的で、もっとも物悲しい音が聞こえてきた。

Pale rays of light tiptoed across the waters; and by and by there was to be heard a sound at once the most musical and the most melancholy in the world:

人魚たちが月に向かって呼びかける声だった。
