"I am a married woman, Peter."

「いや、そんなことはない。」

"No, you're not."

「そうよ、それにベッドで寝ているあの小さな女の子は私の赤ちゃんなの。」

"Yes, and the little girl in the bed is my baby."

「いや、違う。」

"No, she's not."

でも、彼はそうなのだろうと思った。そして、短剣を振り上げながら、眠っている子供に向かって一歩踏み出した。

But he supposed she was; and he took a step towards the sleeping child with his dagger upraised.

もちろん、彼は刺さなかった。

Of course he did not strike.

代わりに床に座り込んで泣きじゃくった。ウェンディはどうやって彼を慰めればいいかわからなかったが、かつては簡単にできたはずだった。

He sat down on the floor instead and sobbed; and Wendy did not know how to comfort him, though she could have done it so easily once.

彼女は今やただの女性に過ぎなかった。彼女は部屋を飛び出して、考えようとした。

She was only a woman now, and she ran out of the room to try to think.

ピーターは泣き続け、やがてその泣き声でジェーンが目を覚ました。

Peter continued to cry, and soon his sobs woke Jane.

彼女はベッドの中で起き上がり、すぐに興味を持った。

She sat up in bed, and was interested at once.

「坊や、」と彼女は言った。「なぜ泣いているの？」

"Boy," she said, "why are you crying?"

ピーターは立ち上がって彼女におじぎをした。彼女もベッドの中から彼におじぎを返した。

Peter rose and bowed to her, and she bowed to him from the bed.

「やあ、」と彼は言った。

"Hullo," he said.

「やあ、」とジェーンは言った。

"Hullo," said Jane.

「僕の名前はピーター・パンだよ、」と彼は彼女に言った。

"My name is Peter Pan," he told her.

「ええ、知ってるわ。」

"Yes, I know."

「僕のお母さんを迎えに来たんだ、」と彼は説明した。「ネバーランドへ連れて行くために。」

"I came back for my mother," he explained, "to take her to the Neverland."

「ええ、知ってるわ、」とジェーンは言った。「あなたのことをずっと待っていたもの。」

"Yes, I know," Jane said, "I have been waiting for you."

ウェンディが遠慮がちに戻ってくると、ピーターがベッドの柱の上に座って得意げに時を告げているのを見つけた。一方ジェーンはナイトガウン姿で、厳かな恍惚感の中で部屋を飛び回っていた。

When Wendy returned diffidently she found Peter sitting on the bed-post crowing gloriously, while Jane in her nighty was flying round the room in solemn ecstasy.

「彼女が僕のお母さんなんだ、」とピーターは説明した。ジェーンは降りてきて彼の傍らに立ち、彼が女性たちの顔に見るのが好きな、あの表情を浮かべて彼を見つめた。

"She is my mother," Peter explained; and Jane descended and stood by his side, with the look in her face that he liked to see on ladies when they gazed at him.

「彼にはお母さんがとても必要なのよ、」とジェーンは言った。

"He does so need a mother," Jane said.
