그들은 피터만큼 우아하지는 않았고, 발을 조금 버둥거리지 않을 수 없었지만, 머리가 천장에 닿을 듯 올라갔고, 그보다 더 황홀한 것은 거의 없었다.

They were not nearly so elegant as Peter, they could not help kicking a little, but their heads were bobbing against the ceiling, and there is almost nothing so delicious as that.

피터는 처음에 웬디의 손을 잡아 주었지만, 팅커벨이 너무 화를 내는 바람에 그만두어야 했다.

Peter gave Wendy a hand at first, but had to desist, Tink was so indignant.

그들은 위아래로, 그리고 빙글빙글 날아다녔다. 웬디가 쓴 말은 '천국 같은'이었다.

Up and down they went, and round and round. Heavenly was Wendy's word.

"있잖아," 존이 외쳤다. "우리 모두 밖으로 나가면 어떨까?"

"I say," cried John, "why shouldn't we all go out?"

물론 이것이야말로 피터가 그들을 유혹해 온 바로 그 목적이었다.

Of course it was to this that Peter had been luring them.

마이클은 준비가 되어 있었다. 그는 10억 마일을 가는 데 얼마나 걸리는지 알고 싶었다. 하지만 웬디는 망설였다.

Michael was ready: he wanted to see how long it took him to do a billion miles. But Wendy hesitated.

"인어들이 있어요!" 피터가 다시 말했다.

"Mermaids!" said Peter again.

"오오!"

"Oo!"

"그리고 해적들도 있어요."

"And there are pirates."

"해적들이라고," 존이 일요일용 모자를 움켜쥐며 외쳤다. "당장 가자."

"Pirates," cried John, seizing his Sunday hat, "let us go at once."

바로 그 순간, 달링 씨와 달링 부인이 나나를 데리고 27번지에서 서둘러 나왔다.

It was just at this moment that Mr. and Mrs. Darling hurried with Nana out of 27.

그들은 거리 한가운데로 달려나와 아이들 방 창문을 올려다보았다. 창문은 여전히 닫혀 있었지만, 방 안은 환하게 빛나고 있었고, 무엇보다 가슴을 옥죄는 광경은, 커튼 위에 비친 그림자로 세 개의 작은 형체가 잠옷 차림으로 바닥이 아닌 공중에서 빙글빙글 돌고 있는 것이었다.

They ran into the middle of the street to look up at the nursery window; and, yes, it was still shut, but the room was ablaze with light, and most heart-gripping sight of all, they could see in shadow on the curtain three little figures in night attire circling round and round, not on the floor but in the air.

세 개가 아니라, 네 개였다!

Not three figures, four!

그들은 떨리는 손으로 현관문을 열었다. 달링 씨는 계단을 뛰어올라가려 했지만, 달링 부인이 조용히 가라고 손짓했다. 그녀는 심지어 자신의 심장도 조용히 뛰도록 하려 애썼다.

In a tremble they opened the street door. Mr. Darling would have rushed upstairs, but Mrs. Darling signed him to go softly. She even tried to make her heart go softly.
