"Do you mean we shall both be drowned?"

"물이 어떻게 차오르는지 보세요."

"Look how the water is rising."

그들은 그 광경을 외면하려고 두 손으로 눈을 가렸다.

They put their hands over their eyes to shut out the sight.

그들은 곧 세상을 떠나게 될 것이라고 생각했다.

They thought they would soon be no more.

그렇게 앉아 있는데, 무언가가 입맞춤처럼 가볍게 피터의 몸을 스쳐 지나가더니 그 자리에 머물렀다. 마치 수줍게 "제가 도움이 될 수 있을까요?"라고 말하는 것처럼.

As they sat thus something brushed against Peter as light as a kiss, and stayed there, as if saying timidly, "Can I be of any use?"

그것은 연의 꼬리였는데, 마이클이 며칠 전에 만든 것이었다.

It was the tail of a kite, which Michael had made some days before.

그것은 그의 손에서 빠져나가 멀리 날아가 버렸던 것이다.

It had torn itself out of his hand and floated away.

"마이클의 연이네," 피터가 무심코 말했지만, 다음 순간 그는 꼬리를 잡아채서 연을 자기 쪽으로 끌어당기고 있었다.

"Michael's kite," Peter said without interest, but next moment he had seized the tail, and was pulling the kite toward him.

"이 연이 마이클을 땅에서 들어 올렸잖아요," 그가 외쳤다. "그러니 당신을 데려가지 못할 이유가 없잖아요?"

"It lifted Michael off the ground," he cried; "why should it not carry you?"

"우리 둘 다요!"

"Both of us!"

"둘을 들어 올릴 수는 없어요. 마이클과 컬리가 시도해 봤거든요."

"It can't lift two; Michael and Curly tried."

"제비를 뽑아요," 웬디가 용감하게 말했다.

"Let us draw lots," Wendy said bravely.

"당신은 숙녀인데; 절대 안 돼요." 그는 이미 연의 꼬리를 그녀에게 묶고 있었다.

"And you a lady; never." Already he had tied the tail round her.

그녀는 그에게 매달렸다. 그 없이는 가지 않겠다고 버텼다. 하지만 피터는 "잘 가요, 웬디"라고 말하며 그녀를 바위에서 밀어냈고, 몇 분 후 그녀는 그의 시야 밖으로 실려 나갔다.

She clung to him; she refused to go without him; but with a "Good-bye, Wendy," he pushed her from the rock; and in a few minutes she was borne out of his sight.

피터는 석호에 홀로 남았다.

Peter was alone on the lagoon.

바위는 이제 아주 작아졌고, 곧 물속에 잠길 것이었다.

The rock was very small now; soon it would be submerged.

창백한 빛줄기들이 수면 위를 살금살금 가로질렀고, 이윽고 세상에서 가장 음악적이면서도 가장 구슬픈 소리가 들려왔다.

Pale rays of light tiptoed across the waters; and by and by there was to be heard a sound at once the most musical and the most melancholy in the world:

달을 향해 부르는 인어들의 노랫소리였다.
