소년들의 환호성과 해적들의 험악한 표정, 둘 다 후크의 눈에 들어왔다.

The exultation of the boys, the lowering looks of the pirates, both were seen by Hook.

"체코," 그가 가장 냉철한 목소리로 말했다, "돌아가서 그 수탉 울음소리를 내는 놈을 데려와."

"Cecco," he said in his most steely voice, "go back and fetch me out that doodle-doo."

용감한 자들 중에서도 가장 용감한 체코는 선장 앞에서 움츠러들며 "싫어요, 싫어요"라고 외쳤지만, 후크는 자신의 갈고리 손을 어루만지며 그르렁거리고 있었다.

Cecco, bravest of the brave, cowered before his captain, crying "No, no"; but Hook was purring to his claw.

"가겠다고 했나, 체코?" 그가 생각에 잠긴 듯 말했다.

"Did you say you would go, Cecco?" he said musingly.

체코는 절망적으로 두 팔을 내저으며 떠났다. 더 이상 노래는 없었고, 모두가 귀를 기울였다. 그리고 다시 죽음의 비명이 들렸고, 또다시 수탉 울음소리가 들렸다.

Cecco went, first flinging his arms despairingly. There was no more singing, all listened now; and again came a death-screech and again a crow.

슬라이틀리만이 입을 열었다. "셋," 그가 말했다.

No one spoke except Slightly. "Three," he said.

후크는 손짓으로 자신의 부하들을 독려했다. "제기랄, 이런!" 그가 우렁차게 외쳤다, "누가 저 수탉 울음소리를 내는 놈을 내게 잡아올 거야?"

Hook rallied his dogs with a gesture. "'S'death and odds fish," he thundered, "who is to bring me that doodle-doo?"

"체코가 나올 때까지 기다려요," 스타키가 으르렁거렸고, 나머지 선원들도 그 말에 동조했다.

"Wait till Cecco comes out," growled Starkey, and the others took up the cry.

"스타키, 자네가 자원했다고 들은 것 같은데," 후크가 다시 그르렁거리며 말했다.

"I think I heard you volunteer, Starkey," said Hook, purring again.

"천만에요!" 스타키가 외쳤다.

"No, by thunder!" Starkey cried.

"내 갈고리는 그랬다고 생각하는데," 후크가 그에게 다가서며 말했다. "스타키, 갈고리의 뜻을 따르는 게 좋지 않겠나?"

"My hook thinks you did," said Hook, crossing to him. "I wonder if it would not be advisable, Starkey, to humour the hook?"

"거기 들어가느니 차라리 교수형을 당하겠어요," 스타키가 완강하게 대답했고, 다시 선원들이 그를 지지했다.

"I'll swing before I go in there," replied Starkey doggedly, and again he had the support of the crew.

"이게 반란인가?" 후크가 그 어느 때보다도 상냥하게 물었다. "스타키가 주모자야!"

"Is this mutiny?" asked Hook more pleasantly than ever. "Starkey's ringleader!"

"선장님, 제발 살려주세요!" 스타키가 온몸을 떨며 애원했다.

"Captain, mercy!" Starkey whimpered, all of a tremble now.

"악수하자, 스타키," 후크가 갈고리를 내밀며 말했다.

"Shake hands, Starkey," said Hook, proffering his claw.

스타키는 도움을 구하며 주위를 둘러보았지만, 모두가 그를 외면했다. 그가 물러서자 후크가 다가왔고, 이제 그의 눈에는 붉은 빛이 타오르고 있었다.

Starkey looked round for help, but all deserted him. As he backed up Hook advanced, and now the red spark was in his eye.
