미리 소식을 알려서 모든 것을 망쳐버리는 것이 얼마나 달콤한 일인가. 그래서 그들이 당당하게 들어설 때 달링 부인이 웬디에게 입을 내밀지도 않고, 달링 씨가 짜증스럽게 외칠 수도 있다. "제기랄, 또 저 녀석들이잖아."

How delicious to spoil it all by breaking the news in advance; so that when they enter grandly Mrs. Darling may not even offer Wendy her mouth, and Mr. Darling may exclaim pettishly, "Dash it all, here are those boys again."

하지만 이렇게 한다 해도 우리는 아무 감사도 받지 못할 것이다.

However, we should get no thanks even for this.

우리는 이제 달링 부인을 조금씩 알아가고 있으며, 그녀가 아이들의 작은 즐거움을 빼앗았다고 우리를 꾸짖을 것이 분명하다.

We are beginning to know Mrs. Darling by this time, and may be sure that she would upbraid us for depriving the children of their little pleasure.

"하지만 부인, 목요일까지는 열흘이나 남았습니다. 그러니 상황을 미리 알려드리면 열흘간의 불행을 덜어드릴 수 있습니다."

"But, my dear madam, it is ten days till Thursday week; so that by telling you what's what, we can save you ten days of unhappiness."

"그렇겠죠, 하지만 그 대가가 너무 크잖아요! 아이들에게서 열 분간의 기쁨을 빼앗는 것이니까요."

"Yes, but at what a cost! By depriving the children of ten minutes of delight."

"아, 그런 식으로 보신다면!"

"Oh, if you look at it in that way!"

"달리 어떻게 볼 수 있겠어요?"

"What other way is there in which to look at it?"

보시다시피, 그 여인은 올바른 기개가 없었다.

You see, the woman had no proper spirit.

나는 그녀에 대해 대단히 좋은 말을 하려 했지만, 이제 그녀가 경멸스러워 한마디도 하지 않겠다.

I had meant to say extraordinarily nice things about her; but I despise her, and not one of them will I say now.

그녀는 사실 준비하라는 말을 들을 필요도 없다. 이미 모든 것이 준비되어 있으니까.

She does not really need to be told to have things ready, for they are ready.

침대는 모두 환기되어 있고, 그녀는 집을 떠나지 않으며, 보아하니 창문도 열려 있다.

All the beds are aired, and she never leaves the house, and observe, the window is open.

우리가 그녀에게 쓸모가 있다면, 차라리 배로 돌아가는 편이 나을지도 모른다.

For all the use we are to her, we might well go back to the ship.

하지만 이미 여기 있으니, 그냥 머물며 지켜보는 것도 나쁘지 않겠다.

However, as we are here we may as well stay and look on.

우리는 그저 구경꾼에 불과하다. 아무도 우리를 진정으로 원하지 않는다.

That is all we are, lookers-on. Nobody really wants us.
