"I am a married woman, Peter."

"아니야, 그렇지 않아."

"No, you're not."

"맞아요, 그리고 침대에 있는 저 어린 아이는 내 아기예요."

"Yes, and the little girl in the bed is my baby."

"아니야, 그렇지 않아."

"No, she's not."

하지만 그는 그런 것 같다고 생각했고, 단검을 높이 들어 잠든 아이를 향해 한 걸음 다가섰다.

But he supposed she was; and he took a step towards the sleeping child with his dagger upraised.

물론 그는 아이를 찌르지 않았다.

Of course he did not strike.

그는 대신 바닥에 주저앉아 흐느껴 울었고, 웬디는 그를 어떻게 달래야 할지 몰랐다. 비록 예전에는 아주 쉽게 할 수 있었지만.

He sat down on the floor instead and sobbed; and Wendy did not know how to comfort him, though she could have done it so easily once.

그녀는 이제 그저 한 명의 여자일 뿐이었고, 생각을 정리하러 방 밖으로 뛰어나갔다.

She was only a woman now, and she ran out of the room to try to think.

피터는 계속 울었고, 곧 그의 흐느낌이 제인을 깨웠다.

Peter continued to cry, and soon his sobs woke Jane.

그녀는 침대에 일어나 앉았고, 곧바로 흥미를 느꼈다.

She sat up in bed, and was interested at once.

"얘야," 그녀가 말했다. "왜 울고 있어?"

"Boy," she said, "why are you crying?"

피터는 일어나 그녀에게 인사를 했고, 그녀는 침대에서 그에게 인사를 했다.

Peter rose and bowed to her, and she bowed to him from the bed.

"안녕," 그가 말했다.

"Hullo," he said.

"안녕," 제인이 말했다.

"Hullo," said Jane.

"내 이름은 피터 팬이야," 그가 그녀에게 말했다.

"My name is Peter Pan," he told her.

"응, 알아."

"Yes, I know."

"엄마를 데리러 왔어," 그가 설명했다. "네버랜드로 데려가려고."

"I came back for my mother," he explained, "to take her to the Neverland."

"응, 알아," 제인이 말했다. "기다리고 있었어."

"Yes, I know," Jane said, "I have been waiting for you."

웬디가 머뭇거리며 돌아왔을 때, 그녀는 피터가 침대 기둥 위에 앉아 신나게 수탉 울음소리를 내고 있고, 잠옷 차림의 제인이 엄숙한 황홀감에 빠져 방 안을 날아다니는 것을 발견했다.

When Wendy returned diffidently she found Peter sitting on the bed-post crowing gloriously, while Jane in her nighty was flying round the room in solemn ecstasy.

"그녀가 내 엄마야," 피터가 설명했다. 그러자 제인이 내려와 그의 곁에 섰는데, 그가 여자들이 자신을 바라볼 때 보고 싶어 했던 그 표정을 얼굴에 띠고 있었다.

"She is my mother," Peter explained; and Jane descended and stood by his side, with the look in her face that he liked to see on ladies when they gazed at him.

"그는 정말 엄마가 필요해요," 제인이 말했다.

"He does so need a mother," Jane said.
