They chuckled, boylike, because they would be late for bed; and it was all mother Wendy's fault!

他们的声音消散之后，湖上陷入了一片冰冷的寂静，随即传来一声微弱的呼喊。

When their voices died away there came cold silence over the lagoon, and then a feeble cry.

「救命，救命！」

"Help, help!"

两个小小的身影正拍打着礁石；女孩已经昏了过去，倒在男孩的手臂上。

Two small figures were beating against the rock; the girl had fainted and lay on the boy's arm.

彼得用尽最后一丝力气将她拉上礁石，然后倒在她身旁。

With a last effort Peter pulled her up the rock and then lay down beside her.

就在他也昏迷过去的那一刻，他看见海水正在上涨。

Even as he also fainted he saw that the water was rising.

他知道他们很快就会被淹死，但他已无能为力。

He knew that they would soon be drowned, but he could do no more.

他们并排躺着时，一条美人鱼抓住了温迪的双脚，开始轻轻地将她拖入水中。

As they lay side by side a mermaid caught Wendy by the feet, and began pulling her softly into the water.

彼得感觉到她从自己身边滑走，猛地惊醒，及时将她拉了回来。

Peter, feeling her slip from him, woke with a start, and was just in time to draw her back.

但他不得不告诉她实情。

But he had to tell her the truth.

「温迪，我们在礁石上，」他说，「但礁石越来越小了，水很快就会漫过来。」

"We are on the rock, Wendy," he said, "but it is growing smaller. Soon the water will be over it."

她到这时候还是不明白。

She did not understand even now.

「我们得走了，」她说，语气几乎显得轻快。

"We must go," she said, almost brightly.

「是的，」他虚弱地答道。

"Yes," he answered faintly.

「彼得，我们是游过去还是飞过去？」

"Shall we swim or fly, Peter?"

他不得不告诉她真相。

He had to tell her.

「温迪，你觉得没有我的帮助，你能游到或飞到那座岛上吗？」

"Do you think you could swim or fly as far as the island, Wendy, without my help?"

她不得不承认自己已经太累了。

She had to admit that she was too tired.

他发出一声呻吟。

He moaned.

「怎么了？」她立刻担忧地问道。

"What is it?" she asked, anxious about him at once.

「温迪，我帮不了你。虎克伤了我，我既不能飞，也不能游泳。」

"I can't help you, Wendy. Hook wounded me. I can neither fly nor swim.
