(Healer of Delos, hear!)

汝は今まで知られぬ苦しみを持つのか、

Hast thou some pain unknown before,

それとも巡る歳月の中で昔の苦行を繰り返すのか？

Or with the circling years renewest a penance of yore?

黄金の希望の子よ、不滅の声よ、どうか告げ給え。

Offspring of golden Hope, thou voice immortal, O tell me.

まずアテネを呼び求む。ゼウスより生まれし女神よ、守り給え！

First on Athene I call; O Zeus-born goddess, defend!

女神よ、姉妹よ、力を貸し給え、

Goddess and sister, befriend,

アルテミスよ、テーバイの守護神よ、我らの広場の中央に高く座し給う方よ！

Artemis, Lady of Thebes, high-throned in the midst of our mart!

死の翼を持つ矢の主よ！

Lord of the death-winged dart!

三柱の御加護を切に願い奉る、

Your threefold aid I crave

死と滅びより我らの都を救い給えと。

From death and ruin our city to save.

いにしえの日々に我らがほぼ滅びんとせし時、汝らが燃える疫病を我らの地より追い払い給いしならば、今また近くにあって我らを守り給え！

If in the days of old when we nigh had perished, ye drave From our land the fiery plague, be near us now and defend us!

ああ、我が苦しみのいかに数知れぬことか！

Ah me, what countless woes are mine!

我らの軍勢はことごとく衰え、

All our host is in decline;

我が魂は武器もなく打ち伏している。

Weaponless my spirit lies.

大地はその恵みある実りを拒み、

Earth her gracious fruits denies;

女たちは不毛の産みの苦しみに泣き叫び、

Women wail in barren throes;

命が次々と打ち倒されていく、

Life on life downstriken goes,

風の鳥の飛翔よりも速く、

Swifter than the wind bird's flight,

火の神の勢いよりも速く、

Swifter than the Fire-God's might,

夜の西の岸辺へと。

To the westering shores of Night.

かくして死に死を重ねて滅ぼされ、

Wasted thus by death on death

我らの都はことごとく滅びていく。

All our city perisheth.

屍は周囲に疫病をまき散らし、

Corpses spread infection round;

看取る者も嘆く者も見当たらない。

None to tend or mourn is found.

祭壇の階段で嘆き悲しみながら、

Wailing on the altar stair

妻たちや老祖母たちが空気を引き裂き、

Wives and grandams rend the air—

長く引き延ばされた呻き声と鋭い叫びが、

Long-drawn moans and piercing cries

祈りと祈祷の言葉に混じり合う。

Blent with prayers and litanies.

ゼウスの黄金の子よ、聞き給え、

Golden child of Zeus, O hear

その天使のような御顔を現し給え！

Let thine angel face appear!

そして我が身に熱い息吹を感じさせるアレスが、盾も鋼鉄もなしに忍び寄り、その声が戦の叫びのごとき彼が、

And grant that Ares whose hot breath I feel, Though without targe or steel He stalks, whose voice is as the battle shout,

突然の敗走に転じて、

May turn in sudden rout,

港なきトラキアの海へと急ぎ去るか、

To the unharbored Thracian waters sped,

Or Amphitrite's bed.
