The Adventures of Roderick Random — Page 5

English → Korean Preface Level 8/10

I have attempted to represent modest merit struggling with every difficulty to which a friendless orphan is exposed, from his own want of experience, as well as from the selfishness, envy, malice, and base indifference of mankind.

To secure a favourable prepossession, I have allowed him the advantages of birth and education, which in the series of his misfortunes will, I hope, engage the ingenuous more warmly in his behalf;

호의적인 선입견을 확보하기 위해, 나는 그에게 출생과 교육의 이점을 부여했으며, 이는 그의 불행들이 이어지는 가운데 순수한 독자들이 그를 위해 더욱 따뜻하게 마음을 쓰도록 이끌기를 바란다;

and though I foresee, that some people will be offended at the mean scenes in which he is involved, I persuade myself that the judicious will not only perceive the necessity of describing those situations to which he must of course be confined, in his low estate, but also find entertainment in viewing those parts of life, where the humours and passions are undisguised by affectation, ceremony, or education;

그리고 일부 사람들이 그가 연루된 비천한 장면들에 불쾌감을 느낄 것임을 예견하지만, 나는 분별 있는 독자들이 그의 낮은 처지에서 당연히 처하게 될 상황들을 묘사하는 것의 필요성을 인식할 뿐만 아니라, 꾸밈이나 격식, 혹은 교육에 의해 가려지지 않은 유머와 열정이 나타나는 삶의 부분들을 들여다보는 데서 즐거움을 찾으리라고 스스로 믿는다;

and the whimsical peculiarities of disposition appear as nature has implanted them.

But I believe I need not trouble myself in vindicating a practice authorized by the best writers in this way, some of whom I have already named.

Every intelligent reader will, at first sight, perceive I have not deviated from nature in the facts, which are all true in the main, although the circumstances are altered and disguised, to avoid personal satire.
