返事はなかった。トムは芸術家の目で最後の一筆を眺め、それからブラシをもう一度やさしく動かして、さっきと同じように結果を確かめた。
No answer. Tom surveyed his last touch with the eye of an artist, then he gave his brush another gentle sweep and surveyed the result, as before.
ベンが彼のそばに並んだ。
Ben ranged up alongside of him.
トムはそのリンゴが欲しくてたまらなかったが、仕事に集中し続けた。
Tom's mouth watered for the apple, but he stuck to his work.
ベンが言った。
Ben said:
「やあ、おい、仕事してるのか？」
"Hello, old chap, you got to work, hey?"
トムは突然振り返って言った。
Tom wheeled suddenly and said:
「あ、ベンか！気がつかなかったよ。」
"Why, it's you, Ben! I warn't noticing."
「ねえ、僕は泳ぎに行くんだ。お前も行きたいだろう？でも、もちろんお前は仕事の方がいいんだろう？そうだろう！」
"Say—I'm going in a-swimming, I am. Don't you wish you could? But of course you'd druther work—wouldn't you? Course you would!"
トムは少し男の子を眺めてから言った。
Tom contemplated the boy a bit, and said:
「それを仕事と呼ぶのか？」
"What do you call work?"
「なんだ、あれが仕事じゃないのか？」
"Why, ain't that work?"
トムは再び白塗りを続けながら、無頓着に答えた。
Tom resumed his whitewashing, and answered carelessly:
「そうかもしれないし、そうじゃないかもしれない。俺が知ってるのは、トム・ソーヤーにはこれが合ってるってことだ。」
"Well, maybe it is, and maybe it ain't. All I know, is, it suits Tom Sawyer."
「まさか、本当に好きだと言うつもりじゃないだろう？」
"Oh come, now, you don't mean to let on that you like it?"
ブラシは動き続けた。
The brush continued to move.
「好きかって？なんで好きになっちゃいけないんだ。毎日塀を白く塗るチャンスがある少年なんているか？」
"Like it? Well, I don't see why I oughtn't to like it. Does a boy get a chance to whitewash a fence every day?"
それは物事を新しい観点で見せた。ベンはリンゴをかじるのをやめた。
That put the thing in a new light. Ben stopped nibbling his apple.
トムはブラシを優雅に前後に動かし、効果を確かめるために後ろに下がり、あちこちに一筆加え、また効果を批評した。ベンはすべての動きを見守り、ますます興味を持ち、ますます夢中になっていった。
Tom swept his brush daintily back and forth—stepped back to note the effect—added a touch here and there—criticised the effect again—Ben watching every move and getting more and more interested, more and more absorbed.
やがてベンは言った。
Presently he said:
「ねえ、トム、少し白塗りをやらせてくれよ。」
"Say, Tom, let me whitewash a little."
