トムは陰気な家の戯画を途中まで描いた。両端に切妻があり、煙突からはコルク抜きのような煙が出ている絵だった。すると女の子の興味が絵に引きつけられ、他のことはすっかり忘れてしまった。

Tom partly uncovered a dismal caricature of a house with two gable ends to it and a corkscrew of smoke issuing from the chimney. Then the girl's interest began to fasten itself upon the work and she forgot everything else.

絵が完成すると、女の子はしばらくじっと見つめ、それからそっとささやいた。「素敵ね——今度は男の人を描いて。」

When it was finished, she gazed a moment, then whispered: "It's nice—make a man."

画家のトムは前庭にデリックのような男を描いた。その男は家を軽々と踏み越えられそうな大きさだったが、女の子は文句を言わなかった。その怪物に満足して、またそっとささやいた。

The artist erected a man in the front yard, that resembled a derrick. He could have stepped over the house; but the girl was not hypercritical; she was satisfied with the monster, and whispered:

「素敵な男の人ね——今度は私が歩いているところを描いて。」

"It's a beautiful man—now make me coming along."

トムは砂時計の形に満月と藁のような手足を描き加え、大きく広げた指には仰々しい扇を持たせた。女の子は言った。

Tom drew an hour-glass with a full moon and straw limbs to it and armed the spreading fingers with a portentous fan. The girl said:

「本当に素敵——私も絵が描けたらいいのに。」

"It's ever so nice—I wish I could draw."

「簡単だよ」とトムはささやいた。「教えてあげるよ。」

"It's easy," whispered Tom, "I'll learn you."

「まあ、本当に？いつ？」

"Oh, will you? When?"

「お昼に。お昼ごはんを食べに家に帰るの？」

"At noon. Do you go home to dinner?"

「あなたが残るなら、私も残るわ。」

"I'll stay if you will."

「よし——それは約束だ。君の名前は何ていうの？」

"Good—that's a whack. What's your name?"

「ベッキー・サッチャー。あなたは？ああ、知ってる。トーマス・ソーヤーでしょ。」

"Becky Thatcher. What's yours? Oh, I know. It's Thomas Sawyer."

「それは叱られるときの名前だよ。おとなしくしているときはトムなんだ。トムって呼んでくれる？」

"That's the name they lick me by. I'm Tom when I'm good. You call me Tom, will you?"

「ええ。」

"Yes."

そこでトムは石板に何かを書き始めたが、女の子に見えないように言葉を隠した。しかし今度は女の子も引っ込み思案ではなかった。見せてほしいとせがんだ。トムは言った。

Now Tom began to scrawl something on the slate, hiding the words from the girl. But she was not backward this time. She begged to see. Tom said:

「ああ、たいしたことじゃないよ。」

"Oh, it ain't anything."

「いいえ、たいしたことよ。」

"Yes it is."

「たいしたことじゃないって。見たくないだろ。」

"No it ain't. You don't want to see.
