「ううん、トム、あなた以外の誰も好きにならない。あなた以外の誰とも結婚しない。そして、あなたも私以外の誰とも結婚しちゃだめよ。」

"No, I'll never love anybody but you, Tom, and I'll never marry anybody but you—and you ain't to ever marry anybody but me, either."

「もちろん。当然だよ。それが決まりなんだ。そして、学校に来るときも、帰るときも、誰も見ていなければ一緒に歩く。パーティーでも互いに選び合う。婚約したらそうするものだからね。」

"Certainly. Of course. That's part of it. And always coming to school or when we're going home, you're to walk with me, when there ain't anybody looking—and you choose me and I choose you at parties, because that's the way you do when you're engaged."

「素敵ね。そんなこと、聞いたことなかったわ。」

"It's so nice. I never heard of it before."

「ああ、すごく楽しいんだよ！ほら、僕とエイミー・ローレンスも——」

"Oh, it's ever so gay! Why, me and Amy Lawrence—"

その大きな瞳が、トムに自分の失言を告げた。彼は言葉に詰まり、口をつぐんだ。

The big eyes told Tom his blunder and he stopped, confused.

「あら、トム！じゃあ、私が初めての婚約相手じゃないのね！」

"Oh, Tom! Then I ain't the first you've ever been engaged to!"

女の子は泣き始めた。トムは言った。

The child began to cry. Tom said:

「ああ、泣かないでよ、ベッキー。あの子のことなんてもう何とも思っていないから。」

"Oh, don't cry, Becky, I don't care for her any more."

「そんなことないわ、トム。わかってるでしょ。」

"Yes, you do, Tom—you know you do."

トムは彼女の首に腕を回そうとしたが、彼女は彼を押しのけ、壁に顔を向けて泣き続けた。

Tom tried to put his arm about her neck, but she pushed him away and turned her face to the wall, and went on crying.

トムはなだめるような言葉をかけながら再び試みたが、また拒絶された。

Tom tried again, with soothing words in his mouth, and was repulsed again.

すると彼のプライドが頭をもたげ、彼は大股で歩き去り、外へ出た。

Then his pride was up, and he strode away and went outside.

彼はしばらくそこでそわそわと落ち着かなく立ちすくみ、時折扉を振り返りながら、彼女が思い直して会いに来てくれることを期待していた。

He stood about, restless and uneasy, for a while, glancing at the door, every now and then, hoping she would repent and come to find him.
