This was something like cutting off retreat, but they got to daring each other, and of course there could be but one result—they threw their tools into a corner and made the ascent.

「しっ！」とトムが言った。
"Sh!" said Tom.
「何？」とハックは恐怖で青ざめながらささやいた。
"What is it?" whispered Huck, blanching with fright.
「しっ！……ほら！……聞こえるか？」
"Sh!... There!... Hear it?"
「うん！……ああ、大変だ！逃げよう！」
"Yes!... Oh, my! Let's run!"
「じっとしてろ！動くな！やつらがまっすぐドアの方へ来てる。」
"Keep still! Don't you budge! They're coming right toward the door."
少年たちは床に身を伏せ、板の節穴に目を当てて、恐怖の苦しみの中で待ち続けた。
The boys stretched themselves upon the floor with their eyes to knotholes in the planking, and lay waiting, in a misery of fear.
「止まった……いや、来てる……来たぞ。もう一言もしゃべるな、ハック。ああ、ここから出られたらなあ！」
"They've stopped.... No—coming.... Here they are. Don't whisper another word, Huck. My goodness, I wish I was out of this!"
二人の男が入ってきた。それぞれの少年は心の中でこう思った。「あれは、最近町に一、二度現れたあの老いた耳の聞こえないスペイン人だ——もう一人の男は今まで見たことがない。」
Two men entered. Each boy said to himself: "There's the old deaf and dumb Spaniard that's been about town once or twice lately—never saw t'other man before."

"T'other" was a ragged, unkempt creature, with nothing very pleasant in his face.
