The two men got out some food and made a luncheon.

長い物思いにふけった沈黙の後、インジャン・ジョーは言った：

After a long and thoughtful silence, Injun Joe said:

「聞けよ、坊主——お前は川を上って元いた場所へ帰れ。

"Look here, lad—you go back up the river where you belong.

俺から連絡が来るまでそこで待ってろ。

Wait there till you hear from me.

もう一度だけこの町に立ち寄る危険は俺が引き受ける、様子を見にな。

I'll take the chances on dropping into this town just once more, for a look.

少し周りを探って、うまくいきそうだと思ったら、あの『危険な』仕事をやろう。

We'll do that 'dangerous' job after I've spied around a little and think things look well for it.

それからテキサスへ！

Then for Texas!

一緒に逃げるぞ！」

We'll leg it together!"

これで話はまとまった。

This was satisfactory.

二人はしばらくしてあくびをし始め、インジャン・ジョーは言った：

Both men presently fell to yawning, and Injun Joe said:

「眠くて死にそうだ！見張りはお前の番だ。」

"I'm dead for sleep! It's your turn to watch."

彼は雑草の中に丸くなり、やがていびきをかき始めた。

He curled down in the weeds and soon began to snore.

仲間が一度か二度彼を揺すると、彼は静かになった。

His comrade stirred him once or twice and he became quiet.

やがて見張りの男もうとうとし始め、頭がだんだん垂れてきた。二人ともいびきをかくようになった。

Presently the watcher began to nod; his head drooped lower and lower, both men began to snore now.

少年たちは深く、安堵の息をついた。トムはささやいた：

The boys drew a long, grateful breath. Tom whispered:

「今がチャンスだ——来い！」

"Now's our chance—come!"

ハックは言った：

Huck said:

「無理だよ——あいつらが目を覚ましたら、死んじまう。」

"I can't—I'd die if they was to wake."

トムは促したが、ハックは後ずさりした。

Tom urged—Huck held back.

とうとうトムはゆっくりと静かに立ち上がり、一人で出発しようとした。

At last Tom rose slowly and softly, and started alone.

しかし最初の一歩でボロボロの床がひどい軋み音を立て、トムは恐怖でほとんど死にそうになりながら座り込んだ。

But the first step he made wrung such a hideous creak from the crazy floor that he sank down almost dead with fright.

二度目の試みはしなかった。

He never made a second attempt.

少年たちはそこに横たわり、のろのろと過ぎる時間を数えながら、時間が終わり永遠が白み始めるかのように感じていた。そしてついに太陽が沈み始めているのに気づき、ほっとした。

The boys lay there counting the dragging moments till it seemed to them that time must be done and eternity growing gray; and then they were grateful to note that at last the sun was setting.

今、一つのいびきが止まった。

Now one snore ceased.
