In an instant both boys were rolling and tumbling in the dirt, gripped together like cats.

Presently the confusion took form, and through the fog of battle Tom appeared, seated astride the new boy, and pounding him with his fists.
"항복이라고 외쳐!" 하고 그가 말했다.
"Holler 'nuff!" said he.
소년은 그저 몸을 빼내려고 버둥거렸다. 그는 울고 있었는데, 주로 분노 때문이었다.
The boy only struggled to free himself. He was crying—mainly from rage.
"항복이라고 외쳐!"—그리고 두들겨 패기는 계속되었다.
"Holler 'nuff!"—and the pounding went on.
마침내 낯선 소년은 억눌린 목소리로 "항복!"이라고 외쳤고, 톰은 그를 일으켜 주며 말했다.
At last the stranger got out a smothered "'Nuff!" and Tom let him up and said:

"Now that'll learn you. Better look out who you're fooling with next time."
새로운 소년은 옷에서 먼지를 털며 훌쩍이고 코를 훌쩍거리면서 자리를 떴고, 이따금 뒤를 돌아보며 고개를 흔들고 "다음에 톰을 잡으면" 어떻게 해주겠다고 협박했다.
The new boy went off brushing the dust from his clothes, sobbing, snuffling, and occasionally looking back and shaking his head and threatening what he would do to Tom the "next time he caught him out."
이에 톰은 야유로 응수하고는 의기양양하게 자리를 떴다.
To which Tom responded with jeers, and started off in high feather,
그런데 톰이 등을 돌리자마자 새로운 소년은 돌을 집어 들어 던졌고, 톰의 어깨 사이를 맞힌 다음 냅다 도망쳤는데, 마치 영양처럼 빠르게 달아났다.
and as soon as his back was turned the new boy snatched up a stone, threw it and hit him between the shoulders and then turned tail and ran like an antelope.
톰은 그 배신자를 집까지 쫓아갔고, 그리하여 그가 어디에 사는지 알게 되었다.
Tom chased the traitor home, and thus found out where he lived.

He then held a position at the gate for some time, daring the enemy to come outside, but the enemy only made faces at him through the window and declined.
