Let those who are in favour with their stars,

별의 은총을 받은 자들로 하여금,

Of public honour and proud titles boast,

공적인 명예와 자랑스러운 칭호를 뽐내게 하라,

Whilst I whom fortune of such triumph bars

그러한 승리를 운명이 가로막은 나는

Unlooked for joy in that I honour most;

Great princes' favourites their fair leaves spread,

위대한 군주들의 총신들은 아름다운 잎을 펼치지만,

But as the marigold at the sun's eye,

마치 태양의 눈길 아래 금잔화처럼,

And in themselves their pride lies buried,

그들의 자존심은 자신들 안에 묻혀 있으니,

For at a frown they in their glory die.

찡그린 얼굴 하나에 그들은 영광 속에서 죽어가기 때문이라.

The painful warrior famoused for fight,

전투로 명성을 얻은 고된 전사도,

After a thousand victories once foiled,

천 번의 승리 끝에 한 번 패하면,

Is from the book of honour razed quite,

명예의 책에서 완전히 지워지고,

And all the rest forgot for which he toiled:

그가 수고하여 얻은 나머지 모든 것도 잊혀지도다:

Then happy I that love and am beloved

그러니 사랑하고 또 사랑받는 나는 행복하도다

Where I may not remove nor be removed.

내가 떠날 수도 없고 떠나보내질 수도 없는 곳에서.

Lord of my love, to whom in vassalage

내 사랑의 주인이여, 그대에게 신하의 예로써

Thy merit hath my duty strongly knit;

그대의 덕이 나의 의무를 굳게 묶었으니;

To thee I send this written embassage

그대에게 이 글로 쓴 사절을 보내노니

To witness duty, not to show my wit.

의무를 증언하기 위함이요, 나의 재치를 드러내려 함이 아니라.

Duty so great, which wit so poor as mine

이토록 큰 의무를, 나처럼 보잘것없는 재치로는

May make seem bare, in wanting words to show it;

표현할 말이 없어 초라하게 보이게 할 수도 있으나;

But that I hope some good conceit of thine

그러나 나는 그대의 어떤 선한 생각이

In thy soul's thought (all naked) will bestow it:

그대 영혼의 사유 속에서 (모두 벌거벗은 채로) 그것을 베풀어 주리라 바라노니:

Till whatsoever star that guides my moving,

내 움직임을 이끄는 어떤 별이든,

Points on me graciously with fair aspect,

아름다운 모습으로 내게 은혜롭게 빛을 비추고,

And puts apparel on my tattered loving,

나의 남루한 사랑에 옷을 입혀,

To show me worthy of thy sweet respect,

그대의 다정한 존중을 받기에 합당한 나를 보여줄 때까지,

Then may I dare to boast how I do love thee,

Till then, not show my head where thou mayst prove me.
