「我を通りて悲嘆の都へ入るべし：
"Through me you pass into the city of woe:
我を通りて永遠の苦しみへ入るべし：
Through me you pass into eternal pain:
我を通りて永遠に失われし者たちの中へ入るべし。
Through me among the people lost for aye.
正義こそ我が構造を築きし創設者なり：
Justice the founder of my fabric mov'd:
我を建てることは神聖なる力の使命にして、
To rear me was the task of power divine,
最高の叡智と、根源的な愛の使命なり。
Supremest wisdom, and primeval love.
我より前には、永遠なるものを除き、創られしものは何もなく、我もまた永遠に存続す。
Before me things create were none, save things Eternal, and eternal I endure.
「ここに入る者は一切の希望を捨てよ。」
"All hope abandon ye who enter here."
このような文字が薄暗い色で、門の高い弧の上に刻まれているのを私は見た。
Such characters in colour dim I mark'd Over a portal's lofty arch inscrib'd:
そこで私はこう言った：「師よ、これらの言葉は難しい意味を持っています。」
Whereat I thus: "Master, these words import Hard meaning."
彼は準備のできた者として答えた：
He as one prepar'd replied:
「ここでは不信をすべて後に残していかねばならぬ。
"Here thou must all distrust behind thee leave;
ここでは卑しき恐れを消し去れ。我々はついにやって来た、
Here be vile fear extinguish'd. We are come
知的な善を失い、悲惨な運命に定められた魂たちを見ると、かつて私が告げた場所へ。」
Where I have told thee we shall see the souls To misery doom'd, who intellectual good Have lost."
そして彼が手を私の方へ差し伸べると、その穏やかな表情に私は励まされ、
And when his hand he had stretch'd forth To mine, with pleasant looks, whence I was cheer'd,

Into that secret place he led me on.

Here sighs with lamentations and loud moans Resounded through the air pierc'd by no star,

That e'en I wept at entering. Various tongues,

Horrible languages, outcries of woe,
怒りの声、低く嗄れた声、
Accents of anger, voices deep and hoarse,
手を打ち合わせてその音を大きくし、
With hands together smote that swell'd the sounds,
それらが一つの騒乱をなし、固い暗闇に染まったその空気の中を永遠に渦巻き続け、
Made up a tumult, that for ever whirls Round through that air with solid darkness stain'd,
嵐の中で飛び散る砂のようであった。
Like to the sand that in the whirlwind flies.
そして私は、まだ迷いに包まれながら叫んだ：
I then, with error yet encompass'd, cried:
「ああ師よ！これは何が聞こえているのでしょうか？これほどまでに悲嘆に暮れているように見える者たちは、いったいどのような人々なのでしょうか？」
"O master! What is this I hear? What race Are these, who seem so overcome with woe?
