บัดนี้ข้าพเจ้าใคร่ครวญเพื่อประโยชน์ของท่าน และขอเสนอว่า

I for thy profit pond'ring now devise,

ขอให้ท่านติดตามข้าพเจ้า และข้าพเจ้าจะเป็นผู้นำทาง

That thou mayst follow me, and I thy guide

จะนำท่านผ่านห้วงอวกาศอันนิรันดร์

Will lead thee hence through an eternal space,

ที่ซึ่งท่านจะได้ยินเสียงกรีดร้องสิ้นหวัง และได้เห็น

Where thou shalt hear despairing shrieks, and see

วิญญาณเก่าแก่ที่ถูกทรมาน ซึ่งร้องขอ

Spirits of old tormented, who invoke

ความตายครั้งที่สอง และจากนั้นท่านจะได้เห็นพวกที่อาศัยอยู่

A second death; and those next view, who dwell

อย่างพอใจในกองไฟ เพราะพวกเขาหวังว่าจะได้มาอยู่

Content in fire, for that they hope to come,

เมื่อถึงเวลาอันสมควร ในหมู่ผู้ได้รับพร

Whene'er the time may be, among the blest,

หากท่านปรารถนาจะขึ้นไปยังดินแดนแห่งนั้น

Into whose regions if thou then desire

ต้องมีวิญญาณที่ดีกว่าข้าพเจ้าเป็นผู้นำ

T' ascend, a spirit worthier than I

จะต้องนำพาท่าน เมื่อข้าพเจ้าจากไป

Must lead thee, in whose charge, when I depart,

ท่านจะถูกฝากไว้ในการดูแลของวิญญาณนั้น เพราะพระราชาผู้ทรงอำนาจสูงสุด

Thou shalt be left: for that Almighty King,

ผู้ทรงครองราชย์เบื้องบน ทรงพิพากษาข้าพเจ้าว่าเป็นกบฏต่อกฎของพระองค์

Who reigns above, a rebel to his law,

และด้วยเหตุนั้นจึงทรงตัดสินไว้ว่า

Adjudges me, and therefore hath decreed,

ไม่มีผู้ใดจะเข้าสู่นครของพระองค์ผ่านทางข้าพเจ้าได้

That to his city none through me should come.

พระองค์ทรงมีอำนาจเหนือทุกส่วน ทรงปกครอง ทรงครอง

He in all parts hath sway; there rules, there holds

ป้อมปราการและบัลลังก์ของพระองค์ โอ้ ช่างโชคดีนักสำหรับผู้ที่

His citadel and throne. O happy those,

พระองค์ทรงเลือก ณ ที่นั่น!" ข้าพเจ้าตอบเขาสั้นๆ ว่า

Whom there he chooses!" I to him in few:

"กวีเอ๋ย! ขอวิงวอนด้วยพระเจ้าที่ท่านมิได้บูชา

"Bard! by that God, whom thou didst not adore,

ข้าพเจ้าขอร้องท่าน (เพื่อที่ข้าพเจ้าจะได้หลีกเลี่ยงสิ่งชั่วร้ายนี้และที่เลวร้ายกว่า)

I do beseech thee (that this ill and worse

ให้นำข้าพเจ้าไปยังที่ที่ท่านกล่าวถึง

I may escape) to lead me, where thou saidst,

เพื่อข้าพเจ้าจะได้เห็นประตูของนักบุญเปโตร และบรรดาผู้ที่

That I Saint Peter's gate may view, and those

ดังที่ท่านบอก อยู่ในสภาพที่น่าสังเวชเช่นนั้น"

Who as thou tell'st, are in such dismal plight."

เขาเดินหน้าต่อไป ข้าพเจ้าติดตามรอยเท้าของเขาอย่างใกล้ชิด

Onward he mov'd, I close his steps pursu'd.
