I was going to wear it tonight, but it was too big in the bust and had to be altered.

It was gas blue with lavender beads. Two hundred and sixty-five dollars.

そんなことをするような男って、どこかおかしいわよね、と相手の女の子が興奮気味に言った。

"There's something funny about a fellow that'll do a thing like that," said the other girl eagerly.

「誰とも揉め事を起こしたくないんでしょうよ。」

"He doesn't want any trouble with anybody."

「誰が？」と私は尋ねた。

"Who doesn't?" I inquired.

「ギャツビーよ。誰かが私に教えてくれたんだけど——」

"Gatsby. Somebody told me—"

二人の女の子とジョーダンは、内緒話をするように頭を寄せ合った。

The two girls and Jordan leaned together confidentially.

「かつて人を殺したことがあると思うって、誰かが私に言ったのよ。」

"Somebody told me they thought he killed a man once."

スリルが私たちみんなの間を走り抜けた。三人のムンブルズ氏は身を乗り出して、熱心に耳を傾けた。

A thrill passed over all of us. The three Mr. Mumbles bent forward and listened eagerly.

「そういうことよりも、」とルシルは懐疑的に反論した。「戦時中にドイツのスパイだったっていう話の方が大きいわよ。」

"I don't think it's so much that," argued Lucille sceptically; "It's more that he was a German spy during the war."

男性の一人が、確かめるようにうなずいた。

One of the men nodded in confirmation.

「彼のことを何でも知っている男から聞いたんだ。ドイツで一緒に育ったんだとさ。」と彼は自信たっぷりに請け合った。

"I heard that from a man who knew all about him, grew up with him in Germany," he assured us positively.

「いいえ、そんなはずないわ」と最初の女の子が言った。「だって戦時中はアメリカ軍にいたんですもの。」

"Oh, no," said the first girl, "it couldn't be that, because he was in the American army during the war."

みんなの信頼が彼女の方に戻ると、彼女は熱を込めて身を乗り出した。「誰も見ていないと思っている時の彼を見てごらんなさいよ。絶対に人を殺したことがあるわ。」

As our credulity switched back to her she leaned forward with enthusiasm. "You look at him sometimes when he thinks nobody's looking at him. I'll bet he killed a man."

彼女は目を細めて、身震いした。ルシルも身震いした。私たちは皆、振り返ってギャツビーを探した。

She narrowed her eyes and shivered. Lucille shivered. We all turned and looked around for Gatsby.
