Gatsby answered for me:

「いや、違います」と彼は叫んだ。「この人じゃない」

"Oh, no," he exclaimed, "this isn't the man."

「違うんですか？」ウルフシームさんはがっかりした様子だった。

"No?" Mr. Wolfshiem seemed disappointed.

「この人はただの友人ですよ。その話はまた別の機会にしましょうと言ったじゃないですか」

"This is just a friend. I told you we'd talk about that some other time."

「失礼しました」とウルフシームさんは言った。「人違いでした」

"I beg your pardon," said Mr. Wolfshiem, "I had a wrong man."

こってりとしたハッシュが運ばれてきて、ウルフシームさんは古いメトロポールの感傷的な雰囲気をすっかり忘れ、獰猛なほど上品な食べ方で食事を始めた。

A succulent hash arrived, and Mr. Wolfshiem, forgetting the more sentimental atmosphere of the old Metropole, began to eat with ferocious delicacy.

その間も彼の目は部屋中をごくゆっくりと見回し、最後に振り返って真後ろにいる人々を確認して一回りを終えた。

His eyes, meanwhile, roved very slowly all around the room—he completed the arc by turning to inspect the people directly behind.

I think that, except for my presence, he would have taken one short glance beneath our own table.

「ねえ、オールドスポート」とギャツビーは私の方に身を乗り出しながら言った。「今朝、車の中で少し怒らせてしまったんじゃないかと思って」

"Look here, old sport," said Gatsby, leaning toward me, "I'm afraid I made you a little angry this morning in the car."

あの微笑みがまた浮かんだが、今回は私はそれに流されないようにした。

There was the smile again, but this time I held out against it.

「私は謎めいたことが好きじゃない」と私は答えた。「それに、なぜ率直に話して、何が望みなのか教えてくれないのかが分からない。なぜ全部ベイカーさんを通してこなければならないんですか？」

"I don't like mysteries," I answered, "and I don't understand why you won't come out frankly and tell me what you want. Why has it all got to come through Miss Baker?"

「いや、後ろ暗いことは何もありません」と彼は請け合った。「ベイカーさんは立派なスポーツウーマンですから、正しくないことは決してしませんよ」

"Oh, it's nothing underhand," he assured me. "Miss Baker's a great sportswoman, you know, and she'd never do anything that wasn't all right."

突然彼は時計を見て、飛び上がり、私をウルフシームさんとテーブルに残して部屋から急いで出て行った。

Suddenly he looked at his watch, jumped up, and hurried from the room, leaving me with Mr. Wolfshiem at the table.

「電話しなければならないんですよ」とウルフシームさんは目で彼を追いながら言った。「素晴らしい男でしょう？」

"He has to telephone," said Mr. Wolfshiem, following him with his eyes. "Fine fellow, isn't he?
